7 19. ARDIZZONE, Edward (author and illustrator). Little Tim and the Brave Sea captain. Tokyo; Koguma Publishing Co. Ltd. 2011. £175

Folio. Finely, discreetly, and handsomely bound in original brown cloth-backed mottled paper-covered boards produced as a facsimile of the original manuscript binding and presented in a skilfully crafted chemise and case, fashioned from light blue board, which contains a recessed panel to house the 47-page colour-printed prospectus for this edition (printed in English and Japanese); the 80-page facsimile manuscript printed throughout on one side of the paper in full colour (after the original watercolours) and including the cover design, a tipped-in erratum, and printers’ notes; fine.

First edition thus, limited to only 1,000 numbered copies. This facsimile edition of the original manuscript of Little Tim and the Brave Sea Captainwas produced to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the first Timbook and is an important addition to an Ardizzone collection. The original is held in the victoria & Albert museum. After prolonged petitioning by mr. Sato of the Koguma Publishing company in Japan, access was granted to reproduce it in its entirety for the collector. The manuscript and this faithful facsimile boast a fine and glorious double- page coloured plate and two other watercolour illustrations which were not included in the printed edition and have not hitherto been reproduced, along with examples of Ardizzone’s calligraphic text which was overlaid in the printed edition. The simple reason for these

original omissions was cost, which required that 4 pages from Ardizzone’s original conceived work be dropped. The prospectus includes a background to this edition written by the collector and printer hidekazu Sato, an essay on the publishing of the manuscript by the author and critic Brian Alderson, and a piece on the v. & A.’s collections by Emma Laws.
