WATER BABIES AND CHILD RESEARCH Leading baby swimming company Water Babies has teamed up with The University of Manchester to undertake research into the physical and psychological impact of structured, taught baby swimming classes on parents, babies and the family unit.

Overseen by Dr Debbie Smith, a Health Psychologist, and Dr Anja Wittkowski, a Clinical Psychologist with expertise in perinatal psychology, the study will examine how effective baby swimming classes are as a form of postnatal, physical activity for new mothers, and how this can help with their fitness and weight loss, as well as the impact that this has on their child.

WATER QUALITY TOP PRIORITY FOR MARINE CREATURES

The Sea Life Centre next to the pier in Brighton is the world’s oldest operating aquarium and the popular attraction has recently benefited from substantial renovation.

With hundreds of highly valuable marine creatures to protect, water quality is a key issue and routine monitoring is now being undertaken with Hach Lange instruments. To protect water quality, each tank at the Brighton attraction has its own filtration system, including a pressurised sand filter, a biological filter and a carbon filter where appropriate. Some tanks, containing particularly sensitive species such as seahorses, octopus and jellyfish, also feature an ultraviolet treatment system.

CAPTURING THE IMAGINATION AT GRAND DESIGNS LIVE 2012

London Swimming Pool Company captured the imagination of visitors when they exhibited alongside SPATA at Grand Designs Live, the iconic home and lifestyle show held at ExCel, London. The two day event saw the London Swimming Pool team fielding many questions, mainly technical in nature, from private individuals, architects and interior designers. Of particular interest was the London contractor’s most recent moving floor pool in Kensington, which featured at the stand in the form of large wall mounted photos. Something else which caught people’s eyes and young visitors’ complete amazement was the bubbling demonstration gadget which Chris Walker,

Contracts Manager, created for the occasion to illustrate the effects of colour changing underwater LED lights.

ONE IN EIGHT PUBLIC SWIMMING POOLS TO CLOSE THIS SUMMER FOR RENOVATIONS

A report to a leading local authority association has claimed that up one in eight community and public swimming pools will be closed during peak times this summer because of repairs and renovations. Ageing facilities, dangerous roofs, poor pool tiling, unsafe pool surrounds, poor ventilation and failed lighting systems are just some of the reasons behind the closures. The leisure group within the Local Government Association (LGA) says that some pools face only temporary closure but the number of pools which will be unable to re- open because of lack of funds will increase dramatically over the next few years.

The holiday period of 2012 looks to be the worst hit with many public swimming pools unable to offer the

sort of safety and quality service they would want.

Said an LGA spokesman: “Swimming pools and leisure services sit alongside public libraries as two of the most at risk public services. Both seem certain to decline seriously before 2020 unless something is done.

“For the most part this is just the ongoing problem of ageing swimming pools which are coming to the end of their natural lives. It’s true that there continues to be investment where possible to restore the facilities but it isn’t going to be possible in all cases.” The LGA, which represents 373 councils in England and Wales, says a 28% cut in the amount of money councils receive from central government between 2010/11 and 2014/15 will contribute considerably to the funding shortfall.

It is true that the list of pools being closed this summer seems to be growing.

Leicestershire’s Waterfield centre will close its swimming pools for four months while it undergoes a £2.5m modernisation.

The Everyone Active facility in Melton Mowbray will undergo a refurbishment to revamp the ageing entrance area, pools and changing rooms.

It is expected that work will be completed by November.

Parr Swimming Centre in St Helens is set to be given a major upgrade. Work has started on a new teaching pool roof, improved ventilation, better spectator facilities and new lighting in both pools. The main pool will be shut throughout the summer and open in September or October.

Gosport will be left without a swimming pool over the summer. Gosport Borough Council has announced it will close Holbrook Leisure Centre in Forest Way because of problems with the roof. A new leisure complex is being built nearby but if the closure goes ahead at the end of the month, the town will be without a pool for up to five months. Staff at the centre will also lose their jobs.

A petition calling for the centre to stay open has been signed by more than 500 people.
