Technical Review | April-June 2012

A typical provincial facility, the “Murun” Radio and TV station, equipped with 150kw MW and 12kw power SW transmitters, was established to rebroadcast National Radio programmes in the Central Mongolian area. Since its establishment, listeners have received National Radio programme with good quality. Since the commissioning of the SW transmitter in 2003, two channels of National Radio Programmes have been broadcast simultaneously. Multi-channel Television broadcasting started in 2009.

Central Television Station

In 1967, a high power station with a 180 meter-high tower was built to broadcast television programmes via UHF in Ulaanbaatar and, in 1991, technical upgrades were undertaken and the 2nd and 4th channel transmission stations were replaced by a complex station with each reserve blocks.

Nowadays, the TV station transmits Mongolian National Public Television’s 2nd channel to the Ulaanbaatar area using a 5 kWt station and the 6th channel to Ulaanbaatar satellite areas via a 300 Watt station.

Coverage Modern Transmitter

In addition, MRTBN is responsible for the technical opereation of FM radio stations broadcasting to Ulaanbaatar residents. A 200 meter high central television tower is mounted with over 60 antennas and feeder systems serving 37 organisations.

Following a technical innovation plan, an internationally open bid for upgrading the 2nd channel equipment of the UHF Station has been announced. Additionaly a 5 kW capacity station, which fully provides modern PAL system services, together with an antenna and feeder system was installed in October, 2007.

The above technical improvements were made by MRTBN’s technical staff in collaboration with Russian engineers and technicians. The main feature of the above station was an additional combiner to integrate the output signals of 1st and 2nd channels before feeding to a single antenna. With two stations connected to one antenna it then became possible to transmit additional TV channels.
