Progression of 3DTV and Ultra High Definition Television

27 2. UHDTV (Ultra High Definition TV)

Due to its undefined physical effects, 3DTV has not met the initial expectation that it would be prevalent within a few years. While 3DTV and UHDTV both utilise the increased resolution of digital TV, it is UHDTV which is now gaining ground as a next generation TV platform.

Last April, Four Korean terrestrial broadcasters, KBS, MBC, SBS, and EBS signed an MOU to field test UHDTV. The test broadcasts will be performed on the newly-assigned CH66, using a 1kW transmitter in the Seoul metropolitan area. Actual schedules and technical specifications have not been decided yet.

NHK has long been planning a UHDTV (Super Hi-Vision, SHV) demonstration during the London Olympic Games in cooperation with the BBC and OBS (Olympic Broadcast Services). The planned format is known to be 7,680 X 4,320 pixel definition (‘8K’mode) with 22.2CH audio.

Though there is yet no agreed international standard for this next generation TV, those core technologies that are not heavily dependent on standardisation are being tested and demonstrated by many organisations.

Screen sizes under consideration for UHDTV are normally called ‘4K’ and ‘8K’, related to their horizontal pixel

numbers. The table below shows the UHDTV formats under consideration for standardisation by the EBU.

From the broadcaster’s point of view, evolving to UHDTV is thought to promise benefits to them by longer viewing time with less of the viewer stress experienced with HDTV and other lower resolution systems. For the manufacturers there is the promise of a new consumer market, going beyond HDTV which is set to become saturated.

Several manufacturers have already formed UHDTV product families (mostly for 4K) to preempt the market.
