Brush paintings popular
A GERMAN collector secured the top lot at the May 12 auction at Dr Fischer (26% buyer’s premium) in Heilbronn, when he bid the estimated €70,000 (£56,190) for a monumental ormolu and mirror-glass surtout de table by Pierre-Philippe Thomire. The 8ft 1in x 2ft 3in (2.47m x 68cm) ensemble by one of the most renowned “bronziers” of his day can be dated to about 1810 and incorporated a pair of vases, two tazzas and a six-armed candelabrum. Much more of a surprise was the hammer price for a group of brush
paintings, one pictured right, between 2ft 1in x 13in and 4ft 2in x 12in (64 x 34cm and 1.28m x 31cm), which were cursorily catalogued as “Chinese, 19th century” and estimated at €200-250. Several canny bidders obviously spotted one or more rarities in the group and pushed the price up to €31,000 (£24,880), at which point a Swiss collector on the phone outpaced his competitors.
Art flies up to ten times the estimate
A GOUACHE painting by 20th century artist Edward McKnight Kauffer (1890-1954) far exceeded expectations when it sold for €33,500 (£27,915) at Vendu Notarishuis (30% buyer’s premium) in the Netherlands on May 8. Estimated at just €2000-3000, the 12¾ x 9¼in
(32.5 x 23.5cm) piece pictured left was fresh to the market, having been given to the vendor’s mother during the First World War, when she and McKnight Kauffer were both located in New York. The avian-themed composition is inscribed and
signed, For Helen from Ted- E. McKnight Kauffer, and seems an appropriate gift given that the artist’s nickname for the mother was oiseau. The image of flying birds in the gouache is
nearly identical to a well-known 1919 poster by the artist, exhibited at the Estorick Gallery last year, entitled Soaring to Success! Daily Herald – the Early Bird and used to advertise the London Daily Herald. McKnight Kauffer drew inspiration for his work
from a range of sources including Cubism and Vorticism, as demonstrated in the piece. His talent lay in bringing these artistic movements

into the commercial sphere; over the course of his life he was commissioned by numerous companies, including London Transport, American Airlines and Shell.

Putting on a Stern face
THE battle for supremacy in the most competitive area of the South African art market continues at Strauss & Co on June 11 with the offer of another trophy work by Irma Stern. Painted in 1939 on Stern’s first visit to Zanzibar, Arab has
all the elements of the most sought-after works from the most sought-after period of South Africa’s most sought-after artist, from subject matter, composition and palette to the original distinctive and typical frame. Pitched at
R7m-9m, the price reflects the R19m hammer Strauss took last year for Stern’s Two Arabs, also from the Zanzibar series, still the highest price achieved for any painting at auction in South Africa. Other highlights
at the sale, which will be held at the Country Club Johannesburg in Woodmead, include Jacob Hendrik Pierneef’s A View Through the Trees, Lowveld (estimate: R7m-9m) and African Figures and Birds (estimate R300,000-500,000), by Walter Batiss.
