international events Russian bidders chase Russian relics
RUSSIAN bidders were particularly active at the sale of militaria and historical antiques held by Munich specialists Hermann Historica (23% buyer’s premium) from April 23-May 4. Among the lots they carried away
was a finely decorated flintlock gun, dated 1747 and attributed to the master gunsmith Ilya Salischev in Tula. During the first half of the 18th century he created numerous pieces for the Tsar and his court. In
the Hermitage collection in St Petersburg there are two of his flintlock pistols with almost identical decoration. A hunting rifle bore the arms of the
Polish Lithuanian royal family and is assumed to have been a present from the Tsar. It was in good condition and came complete with its original ramrod. Estimated at €54,000, it changed hands for €60,000 (£49,125). There was more action when a
mid-19th century Order of St George,
pictured, came up for sale with an estimate of €15,000. It was a rare gold and white enamel version, awarded to Major General Georgy Georgievitch Emmanuel (1815- 68) in November 1855 for 25 years of service. There were numerous potential takers,
Makovsky is star lot in several surprises
THE auctioneers at Schloss Ahlden (25% buyer’s premium) near Hanover had acquired a wide variety of works of art for their sale on May 5-6 and 12 and
there were several surprise results. A 2ft 10in x 3ft 1in (86 x 93cm) painting entitled
Le mur fleuri (Wall Covered with Flowers) by Konstantin Yegorovich Makovsky (1839-1915) turned out to be one of the star lots, when it was bid from the estimated €17,000 to €94,000 (£76,310). The painting was fresh to the market, having been in a Hamburg collection for many decades. The artist was feted for his portrayal of everyday scenes
but also for his history paintings. At the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris he was awarded a gold medal for The Death of Ivan the Terrible. A German sculpture museum had to compete with
seven telephone bidders before it could buy an impressive late 19th century bronze, Oedipus and the Sphinx. The 4ft 9in (1.45m) figure pictured left was modelled by Christian Behrens (1852-1905) in 1880 and cast in 1894. Only one other copy is known; it belongs to a museum in Breslau. The one on offer had been in the same local collection since the late 19th century and was estimated at €9500. By the time the bidding was done, the price had reached €53,000 (£43,025).
one of whom put an end to the bidding with his successful offer of €50,000 (£40,940). Also much in demand was a golden bracelet with a miniature portrait of Lieutenant General Georgy Arsenievitch Emmanuel (1775-1837), the father of Georgy Georgievitch. After vigorous bidding from several quarters it was knocked down to an
anonymous buyer for €27,000 (£22,100), nine times the estimate.
