Will Masters shake up the fairs world?

THERE’S a brawny new challenger in London that could alter the capital’s fair landscape. After months of rumours about who might be doing it, whether it will work, and a lot of talk at TEFAF Maastricht, the exhibitor list for the inaugural Frieze Masters – the first historical art fair to be organised by contemporary organisation Frieze – was announced last week. The organisers hope it will “give a unique contemporary perspective on art throughout the ages” and it will coincide with the contemporary art fair Frieze London, now in its tenth year, from October 11–14 on Gloucester Green, Regent’s Park, in an adjacent marquee. Some 98 international galleries from 18 countries will take part; a broad mix offering everything from antiquities and tribal art to Old Masters and 20th century art and design. Pretty much the only thing that won’t be here is period furniture. The fair will be split into two areas, with 77 dealers in the main section and 22 in Spotlight (Galerie Hubert Winter exhibit in both sections). Spotlight is

SINGLE OWNER SALE The Contents of a Guernsey Farmhouse

Thursday 14th June at 2pm 350 lots including good collection of small silver including 23 caddy spoons,

George III nutmeg grater, vinaigrettes, miniature tea set, 18th and 19th century furniture including 20ft early Victorian mahogany dining table with leaf rack, clocks and barometer, pottery, porcelain and glass, Oriental ceramics, Channel Islands books, oil paintings, collectables, etc.

dedicated to solo presentations of works by less well-known 20th century artists intended to reach “beyond established painters and sculptors”, although with showcased artists including Sigmar Polke and Bruce Nauman, these are hardly unknowns. The list includes numerous TEFAF exhibitors, such as London dealers Jean- Luc Baroni, Colnaghi, Daniel Katz, Sam Fogg, Ben Janssens Oriental Art, Marlborough Fine Art, Hauser & Wirth and Rupert Wace Ancient Art, and international names such as Galerie Daniel Blau (Munich), Galerie Meyer Oceanic Art (Paris), Moretti Fine Art (London/ Florence), Acquavella Galleries (New York), Axel Vervoordt Gallery (Antwerp) and Van de Weghe Fine Art (New York). Frieze Masters is the brainchild of

Frieze co-founders Amanda Sharp and Matthew Slotover who believe that running the fairs side by side will “make London the focus for as broad as possible an international art audience and will benefit from a crossover between audiences of contemporary and historical art”. Fair director Victoria Siddall has been

with Frieze since 2004 and was previously at Christie’s. “The exhibitor list reflects the unique nature of the fair – they are all the best at what they do – and represents a diverse range of art throughout history and from all over the world,” she said.

The event may tread a little on the toes

of the Pavilion of Art & Design London (October 14-14) in Berkeley Square, a successful and stylish fair founded in 2007 by the French duo Patrick Perrin and Stéphane Custot, which has enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship with the contemporary Frieze fair. But, commenting last year on the potential competition from Frieze Masters, Mr Perrin said: “For us it is all about location and having the right combination of artworks and collectors which keep the dealers coming back. Why would you leave a fair that is unanimously appreciated by both collectors and the public?” London’s so-called ‘Frieze Week’ in October is already a honeypot for contemporary collectors and a hugely important time in this market, with auctions, exhibitions and satellite fairs taking place too. But this new fair could make October of greater significance to the wider art and antiques world. The Frieze Masters concept certainly seems to reflect today’s more expansive approach to collecting across styles and periods rather than being confined to a single discipline. It has certainly got an A-list cast of exhibitors. Now the test will be whether it can attract the buyers too. ■ For a full exhibitor list, see www.antiquestradegazette.com
