Maryland Will Miss Genevieve Black-


wood, wife of Dr. Tom Blackwood of New Market-Middletown Valley Hounds, died on September 23 in Potomac at the age of 84.

was a graduate of the Academy of the Holy Cross and Rosemont College. She was a member of the Potomac Hunt Club and New Market-Middletown Valley Hounds. Lawrence Lacey, 95, of Towson, died on July


16. Lacey was a retired racing offi cial and stew- ard. Lacey began working at Maryland tracks in 1948 primarily as a placing and patrol judge. He advanced to the racing secretary’s offi ce and in 1978 became an associate steward. Lacey was one of the four Pimlico Race Course stewards who voted unanimously to stay Codex’s Preak- ness victory over Genuine Risk in 1980. Lacey retired in 1984. agent Larry Saumell died October 18 at the age of 54. Saumell won 2,098 races during his riding career from 1973 to 1999. He later worked as a regional manager for the Jockeys’ Guild. Saumell was the leading rider at Calder Race Course in 1978 and at the Bowie Race Track in 1985.

On Sunday, September 25, renowned Maryland


vet Harold “Doc” Holbrook passed away of cor pulmonale related to chronic pulmonary emboli at the age of 83. Recognized as the Maryland Horseman of the Year in 2001, for nearly 40 years, Harold Holbrook took care of virtu- ally every animal in Mont- gomery County, ducks to don- keys, Holsteins to Holsteiners. He came to be known as the “James Herriott of Montgom- ery County,” a veterinarian, who—like his Brit- ish counterpart—not only cured the animals’ ills, but also gave out healthy doses of good humor and common sense to their owners. His career has followed the evolution of veteri-

nary medicine in Maryland, from a time when there was just one veterinarian per county to present day Maryland with thousands of vet- erinarians and with nearly as many specialists as there are ailments. At its peak, his Town & Country vet prac- tice had 6,000 to 7,000 large and small animal clients, a staff of between two and four veterinarians besides himself, fi ve full-time techni- cians and assistants plus other part-timers.
