FILM ROUND UP

02 SEPTEMBERApollo 18– “Tere’s a reason we’ve never gone back to the moon…” says the tagline. Tere is also a reason for people to stop making mockumentary horror films – no-one believes they are real anymore. It’s like the Blair Witch Science Project!

09 SEPTEMBERColumbiana– Oliver Megaton directs Avatar’s Zoe Saldana in her first starring role as a girl who after witnessing her parents death in Bogota, trains to be a stone cold assassin. Familiar territory delivered with style from the drawing board of Luc Besson.

16 SEPTEMBER30 Minutes or Less– Jesse Eisenberg and Danny McBride star in this hit-and-miss comedy about a man who has to rob a bank or get blown to pieces. Te title eludes to pizza delivery, whereby you get the pizza free if it is late. Can you see the film free if it’s not funny? Check for details.

23 SEPTEMBERWarrior– Tom Hardy plays a mixed martial arts fighter who is trained by his alcoholic father (Nick Nolte) in the latest in a line of fighting/dysfunctional family dramas. Boys will love the fighting, Girls will love Tom Hardy with no top on, verdict - double win.

DVD OF THE MONTH PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES.

Tis film feels like a tentative re-union after a fight. Tere’s a nervous greeting, an uneasy handshake following an awkward

face to face. You sheepishly apologise for leaving it so long, but that after the last time... Tey understand, it was awkward; they just went a bit too far and they promise that they have changed. Well, some things have changed. Gone is the massive budget, the Black Pearl and most of the original film’s cast. Johnny Depp returns as Captain Jack Sparrow, as does Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa. Tey are joined by Ian McShane as the infamous villain Blackbeard and the love interest is provided by Penelope Cruz, so it’s not like the list of stars has dwindled, just shifted. Whilst the plot is more streamlined with a simple story of three ships racing to find the fountain of youth, it is all a bit too straightforward and some characters, whilst played well, lack depth and are more there as a plot device, which is less than the actors deserve. Te special effects are fewer, but are used well and the mermaid scene in the bay looks as good as anything previous. Watch this film because there might be another one, and after they’ve won our trust back, it might be better than this one.

DVD ROUND UP

05 SEPTEMBERSucker Punch– Zack Snyder’s action fantasy is like a girls- with-guns, steampunk Alice in Wonderland. Visually stunning, if a bit confused, the film’s soundtrack is the real treat featuring Skunk Anansie, Bjork and some of the film’s stars re-working some classics.

19 SEPTEMBERAttack the Block- Joe Cornish (of ADAM AND JOE fame) makes his feature film directorial debut with this comedy/sci-fi that pitches Aliens against Hoodies. My money’s not on the aliens!

26 SEPTEMBERTor– Another Marvel comics super hero gets his own film; this one feels better directed than some, and so it should with Kenneth Brannagh at the helm. Natalie Portman and Chris Hemsworth have chemistry, so even the non-action scenes work.
