Wax down it, he being of the generation that still believes that homosexuality is a contagious disease. It wasn’t till we reached a bar called Balls and I suggested we go in that he took a good look around. Needless to stay I was frog marched out of the street where he hailed a Tuk Tuk (the most terrifying ride of my life) and headed back to the hotel.

In the relative security of the ironically named but stunning Sukhothai hotel, the usually tee- total Mr Hot Wax ordered several Pina Coladas for himself (and he was afraid of being mistaken for gay).

Now relaxed we took a look round the bar; we were in the minority of customers not coupled up with a thai boy or girl. Men sat with girls young enough to be their grand-

daughters sitting alone as couples. Tere were several larger groups of middle aged gentlemen in the company of one or two Tai boys.

Te next morning, the same couples and groups were sitting by the pool sharing drinks and meals. I speculated that they were simply on holiday to meet the folks or mates on a stag weekend. Mr Hot Wax looked skeptical. “Well its possible!” I challenged, “Just look at Te Hangover II if you need proof!”

Indeed a colleague of Mr Hot Wax’s had met a nice Tai girl on holiday and eventually ‘bought and married’ her, paying for her by putting her on his mortgage. OK admittedly a year or two after she produced her first child in England she hit him over the head with a frying pan leaving him with 8 stitches and the parting words, “you pay me maintenance

you cheap bastard” (actually he is cheap). But he still believes in the love of a good Tai woman - I believe he is on his third now. And I can understand why. Te people of Tailand are wonderful, always smiling always helpful.

As the day round the pool wore on we realised the men didn’t change but the partners did. It was clear I had to rethink my romantic optimism of the scene that was playing out - these were Westerners’ playthings, shipped in and out as required. Was the Sukhothai Hotel’s name getting lost in translation?
