The Attorney's Office Tools

Te MAJ Legislative Committee also works extremely hard opposing tort reform measures and immunity bills. Te members of this core group of our legislative committee truly dedicate their January-March each year to making sure that our clients’ interests are protected in Annapolis. In addition to testifying at the legislative hearings, this core group meets each week for several hours to strategize, they meet with legislators in Annapolis, and they attend fundraisers for those politicians who vote on the legislation that impacts trial lawyers and our clients. Tank you for giving me the opportunity to serve as your

relevant topics to Maryland Trial Lawyers. Richard Neuworth and Elliott Andalman continue to do a great job as the Co- Chairmen of the Trial Reporter Committee, and we very much appreciate the efforts of their entire committee. We are also very appreciative of all of the articles that our members have contributed. I thank Cary Hansel for his tireless efforts in putting together “Appellate Watch” which appears in Trial Reporter Magazine each month. Our Amicus Committee, led by David Kopstein (our

new 2010-2011 Parliamentarian), continues to monitor cases before the Maryland Appellate Courts, and has filed numerous amicus curiae briefs on behalf of the Maryland Association for Justice with the Maryland Court of Appeals this year. We are also very appreciative of those MAJ Members

who are in Presidents Club and Leader’s Forum. Instead of paying regular dues, MAJ Presidents Club Members donate $100-$300 per month. MAJ Leader’s Forum Members have agreed to donate $10,000 over a 4-year election cycle. A special thank you to the law firm of Dugan Babij Tolley, LLC as they are ALWAYS at the forefront of our fundraising efforts; to Lawrence Greenberg and Eric Schloss who are our Fundraising Chairmen; and to Bruce Plaxen who is our PAC Chairman. Tis year we had successful fundraisers for Governor O’Malley and Senator Mikulski; and we also continued to grow our PAC. All MAJ Members owe a debt of gratitude to our core

legislative team which is led by Robert Zarbin and also includes Dan Doherty, Jr. (MAJ Lobbyist), Frank Boston (MAJ Lobbyist), Bruce Plaxen, Wayne Willoughby, George Tolley, John Bratt, Eric Schloss, Jim MacAlister and Laura Zois. Our legislative team testified at dozens of legislative hearings in Annapolis, and as I write this article, this group is working hard to pass legislation including a bill to increase automobile liability insurance minimum limits from $20,000/$40,000 to $30,000/$60,000, a bill to increase the jury prayer amount from $10,000 to $20,000. and a bill that would allow for punitive damages against drunk drivers.

2009-2010 President. As I pass the gavel to Robert Zarbin at the Presidents Dinner on May 22, 2010, and I look at the strength of our leaders, Board of Governors and Membership, I know that MAJ’s future is in excellent hands. I conclude with a quote from Te Honorable Marcus Shar because it serves as a powerful reminder to MAJ’s future leaders and to all trial lawyers of why so many of us give our time, money and undying commitment to fulfill the mission of the Maryland Association for Justice:

“As trial lawyers, you do serve a vital and critical function in our society…without you there simply is no justice. You are often the last hope that our clients have. Regardless of the size of the case, you are the voices of the people you represent. I can think of no higher calling. Its real and its sacred. “
