office is scanned to PDF. Tis enables me full access to an entire case file from outside the office using remote access. Consequently, even though I may be in California for an expert deposition, I can work on any file I wish to while I am away. Tis has also enables me to avoid bridge traffic on Fridays in the summer and work from my house which is sixty miles away from my office.

Case Management Software Case management software is essential to any small or

solo law practice. I use Perfect Practice but there are several other good case management systems, Pins and Needles and Amicus Attorney come to mind. Case management software first and foremost allows you to manage your calendar. It warns you when deadlines are approaching and lets you easily record case activity. Having a good calendaring system will prevent you from stressing about deadlines. Case Map, Time Map, and Text Map are also good software programs that are worth exploring. Tese programs enable you to track witnesses and their testimony, tag exhibits, and make time lines very easily. Tey are expensive but they make life much easier when you are trying to put together a complex case.

Depositions I also highly recommend Sanction and its later version

Verdical. Sanction is a trial presentation software program that enables you to organize all of your exhibits as well as deposition testimony. Sanction has literally revolutionized the way that I practice law. Sanction enables you to edit clips of video deposition testimony for use at trial. With a little practice, video clips can be edited on the fly pending rulings

go to toe-to-toe with big defense firms. It is essential that you have some means of logging into your office network remotely so that when you are out of town taking depositions you can access your office computers. Having a program that allows you to do this will make it easy for you to respond to something that needs attention on an urgent basis. Tere are several websites that allow you to do this. I use www.logmein. com. It is a free service. You will have to pay if you want remote printing and such, but with email you can simply log onto your network and email yourself any file that you wish to work on.
