ULLAPOOL

School launches own skiff

On a Friday in early May, Ullapool High School’s new St Ayles skiff was launched, reports Nigel Sharp. She was built from a Jordan Boats kit by pupils from the school, supervised by teacher Topher Dawson and helped by local boatbuilder Mark Stockl. A wonderful atmosphere was created as four of the school’s pipers led the boat and dozens of pupils to the edge of Loch Broom where the skiff was named Cul Mor after a local mountain. Cul Mor is part of a revival in local rowing following the birth of the Scottish Coastal Rowing Association a year ago. Since then an amazing 40 of these Iain Oughtred designs have been built or are in build in Scotland. Eleven regattas this summer will culminate in a national championship at a venue still to be decided.

yachts from over the Channel in France – the classic Dix Août owned by the artist Marc Berthier, and the modern Rumble Bee owned by Claude Draeger. There were nine moderns, the winning boat of the

series being Wildcat II owned and sailed by Andy and Cathy Ash-Vie, owners of Harken Marine. Of the six classics, Titia, owned and rebuilt by Brian Pope along with Andy Postle, won the regatta.

80 years of the Norfolk O-D

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the 14ft (4.3m) Norfolk One-Design, writes Richard Johnstone-Bryden. Twenty of these beautiful gunter- rigged clinker dinghies raced from Hickling Broad to Potter Heigham on Easter Monday to recreate the first race for the class which was held on Easter Monday 1931. On that occasion the race ran from Potter Heigham to Hickling and back and just six examples

participated – only seven had been built by then. This year’s event represented the biggest single gathering of this popular class since a similar event was held in 2006 to mark the design’s 75th Anniversary.

The class is raced through the winter by the Norwich Frostbite Sailing Club and smaller numbers can be seen competing in events across the Broads throughout the summer months, including the annual Beccles Regatta.
