Water testing specialists Lovibond Tintometer have completed work on a new generic water testing technical bulletin for SPATA members. We look at the work of the company who have been SPATA members since 2004 and why accurate and regular water analysis is so important

erforming water analysis correctly and precisely has never been so important. The search for the best route for crystal clear water is linked with the ability to test its quality regularly. There are many product names and variations and types but all are basically designed to ensure ease of use and clarity of instructions.

Achieving clear water is critical but maintaining a strong testing regime which ensures that it stays that way is essential for the safety of swimming and the reputation of the pool industry. Significant developments have been made over the years when it comes to pool testing products, specifically in terms of sophistication and accuracy. Today’s solutions meet all applications and budgets and continue to evolve. SPATA has been keen to promote regular, careful pool water testing. A new SPATA Technical Bulletin has been produced to stress to members what needs to be done and how. It’s a generic bulletin prepared by water testing specialists Lovibond Tintometer and put together by Sales Manager Colin Day.

Colin, who is also a member of the Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers said: “We have always been a company to promote how important water testing is and how it should be carried out correctly. We have always put emphasis on making sure that staff are trained properly and know how to use the procedures.

“The standard of water testing in the industry is generally good when you get the right people being able to understand what they are doing. There is sometimes a problem when new people come into an operation who don’t understand why and what to test. You can get a situation when testing is passed on to someone like a lifeguard to do at the last moment and that’s when it gets to be a problem.

“We have been SPATA members since 2004 and feel it’s essential to support the industry and do what we can to help. We feel it’s important to raise

the profile of water testing not just for our benefit, but for the benefit of the whole industry and by producing this bulletin I think we all hope that we can go on being aware of the need to improve.” Half a century has passed since Tom Palin pioneered the DPD method for measuring chlorine levels yet this remains the mainstay in testing today. The methods of testing, however, have progressed enormously.

Traditionally, measurements were made using a colour comparison system, such as the Lovibond 2000+, which is still widely used. Indeed, the ‘fixed colour’ glass Comparator still offers accurate and reliable testing. However, the popularity of public pools drove the need for more accurate, objective systems. The photometer was born and today offers features such as single button operation; full waterproofing; memory and download; and covers all the essential pool water tests. The Lovibond range offers users equipment for all water test requirements: potable, drinking and washing water, surface, ground and raw water, wastewater and effluents and swimming pools. State-of-the-art water treatment is an essential precondition for safe and healthy swimming – whether in private or public facilities. In order to satisfy health-related criteria while maintaining the value of such a facility, the golden rule for water treatment is “as much as necessary and as little as possible”.

It goes without saying that the main water quality parameters need to be checked on a regular basis in order to ensure an optimum water treatment programme in changing operating conditions. If testing shows that the hygiene-related parameters deviate from the target values or recommended limit values, the operator can immediately take corrective action to avoid potential risks to health before such risks are allowed to arise.

And this is where the system of Lovibond water testing equipment and reagents comes

into play. The Lovibond range provides operators with analysis systems that measure the actual condition and quality of the water with maximum precision. The systems succeed in reconciling the seemingly irreconcilable goals of easy handling, safe reagents offering long-term stability, high detection accuracy, and reproducibility of results.

Lovibond Tintometer is running water testing training courses around the country throughout this year. The courses, suitable for anyone involved in pool water testing, include: taking the sample; good practice in testing; what to test for and why; testing equipment and correct usage; an overview of balanced water and an on-hand, practical session where candidates can test samples of their own pool water.

Unique to SPATEX 2011, Lovibond Tintometer is offering 10% off these training courses throughout 2011. You can get information on the Lovibond Stand No L122 and also pick up a voucher. spn

Lovibond Tintometer’s Colin Day is one of the speakers at the SPATEX workshop programme next month, including a session on Monday 7 February at 11.45am. His subject is Water Testing Demonstration when he will be looking at good practice in water testing. This session will show how to perform the main water tests required for good quality pool water, and will give delegates the opportunity to participate in water testing on a variety of samples.
