ASA LOOKS AT
NATIONAL SWIM PLAN Swimming’s governing body, the ASA, has been assessing if the National Plan for Teaching Swimming is being implemented properly. The ASA has been talking to swim schools and pool operators to find out exactly what they think of the current 2007 version of the national plan, especially because many pools are reaching their three-year mark, having started
implementation in December 2007 or January 2008. Bollington Health & Leisure Centre was just one of those approached by the ASA and manager Steven Hurst said after a period of ‘bedding in’ the plan is now working well. He said: “We have definitely moved towards a games based approach to learn to swim at our centre in the last 12 months. Whilst we knew it was a crucial part of the National Plan we needed some time to plan games and activities into our schemes of work and lesson programmes.” Jon Glenn, the ASA’s Head of Learn to Swim, said: “We will not be changing the plan itself and the outcomes in each stage but we are always looking for ways to support teachers and pool operators.”
MOVING FLOOR POOL INNOVATION
Dundee’s new £24m sports centre will offer one of the most exciting swimming experiences in Scotland. The 50-metre swimming pool will be double the size of the training pool in the previous dilapidated Olympia building. The innovative moving floor design of the new pool will also allow operators to change the depth and transform it into two 25m pools.

AQUAFLEX AND CROSDIL LEISURE GO ‘BLACK’ TO NATURE
Crosdil Leisure more than rose to the challenge when a customer asked them to design and construct the exact replica of a pool they had seen and photographed while travelling in South Africa.
Crosdil’s first job was to sculpt out the bowl shape for the template of what was to be a 9m x 23m pool with a 2ft deep beached area and a the further construction of a 15m ‘pool within a pool’ set in the centre of the overall pool area. The addition of a black lining using Aquaflex’s Alkorplan on-site lining created a natural finish for the deeper part of the pool with the heavy duty lining extending into the beached area where it was then sandwiched between felt and finally concreted.
A waterfall was built using real rocks; with some weighing up to 3 tonnes. This feature also hid the plant room as a continuation of the natural theme and the pool has
been heated using solar energy. The job took nine weeks and the result is a stunning pool that is eco friendly and as beautiful as its inspirational South African original. PLYMOUTH POOL PROJECT SET TO BE EUROPE’S BEST
Plymouth’s new £46.5m Life Centre will provide one of Europe’s top swimming complexes. The new water complex – part of a massive sporting project on the waterfront – is ahead of its schedule to open next autumn. Sport England who visited the site before Christmas said the project was committed to producing one of the best swimming pool and water leisure facilities not just in the UK but in Europe. A spokesman called it a ‘gold star project’. The project is Plymouth’s biggest investment in leisure facilities and is designed to meet the city’s sporting needs well into the 21st century. The University of Plymouth will
give a £2.5m contribution to the new facility with most of the remaining investment coming from the sale of council property. The facilities will include a family leisure pool with flumes, ‘beach entry’ and bubble pool, a 10-lane, 50 metre swimming pool with moveable floors and submersible ‘booms’ allowing flexible use, one of the top four diving pools in the country, also offering a moveable floor so it can be used as a standard pool and a dry side training facility for competitive divers.

BEWARE THE ‘HOT TUB’ RAIDERS
Police are investigating bizarre burglaries where thieves make use of hot tubs while taking part in raids on homes.
There have been four similar incidents at homes with hot tubs in and around Oswaldtwistle, in Lancashire.
It is understood the gang has stolen thousands of pounds worth of expensive goods and cash. Raiders have been taking late- night dips in the hot tubs either before or after the burglary. Ashley and Cherie Deakin had more than £3,500 worth of goods stolen from their detached home. The couple, who had bought the hot tub last year as a joint 40th birthday present, and their son Nathaniel, 16, were sleeping upstairs when the burglars jumped over the garden fence to enjoy a soak. The raiders then broke into the house and stole a 42in plasma TV, a Nintendo Wii games console, mobile telephones, laptop and a wallet.
