meetings,”he admits. Colleague Tilman Hainle, who

owned Hainle Vineyards Estate Winery with his family then, but is now owner of Working Horse Winery in Peachland, agrees it was a challenge trying to weed out the wines of the “old days,’ without stifling different wine-making styles. By 1994 or so, Hainle says the major wineries realized they had to move toward production of premium wines as well, even if they kept their bag-in-a-box wines, and Anthony von Mandl of Mission Hill was one of the first to move in that direction. At the time, Hainle noted, “We didn’t realize that we were pioneers of an industry that was re-inventing itself.î

Representing grape growers on that early board of the BCWI was Lanny Martiniuk, who opened a winery in 2007 called Stoneboat Vineyards in Oliver with his family and he admits, “In my wildest dreams I never imagined the industry would grow this quickly, do so well or produce such great wine.”

But, it was only when B.C. wines began winning awards in global competitions that B.C. consumers began to sit up and take notice that the local wine industry was producing much more than the jug wines of the past.

Today, consumers are very loyal to B.C. wines, and tourists come from all over the world to see what all the fuss is about.

They’re looking for a wine and food experience; to meet the winemakers and see the grapes in the vineyard; to meet the chefs while they taste test pairings of fine wine and top-flight food.

And that’s where Prodan and the BCWI come in now. “In the past, the focus was on the product, but consumers now are really interested in who grows the grapes. It’s time to bring that to the fore,”comments Prodan.

And, that’s the story he’s aiming to tell, so producers need to be prepared to open their facilities to inspection by consumers; to invite them in to see the workings of a real vineyard, winery and even restaurant. “We need to all make sure we’re working together,”he says.

The original members of the BCWI 20

board were chairman Harry McWatters, Bruce McDonald, Martiniuk, Tom Capozzi, Heiss, Adolf Kruger, Barry Irvine and Michael Warren from the ministry.

Today’s board is headed up by Josie Tyabji, with directors Mike Raffan, Scott Fraser, Ingo Grady, Lawrence Herder, Pam Luckhurst, Chris Wyse and Rod King.
