53 SO HOW DO PERISTALTIC DOSING PUMPS WORK?
The clue to how these pumps work is in the dictionary definition. Peristaltic means ‘the succession of waves’.
Peristaltic pumps are a type of displacement pump used for pumping chemicals into a swimming pool. The fluid is contained within a flexible hose which is fitted inside the pump casing. The pumping principle, known as peristalsis, is based on changing the compression and relaxation of the hose pipe drawing content in and propelling product away. This process makes a peristaltic pump the most accurate dosing pump or metering pump. For the pool owner it is ideal as it pumps out an equal amount of liquid every time. The liquid being pumped never comes into contact with any moving parts because it is totally contained within the re-enforced hose or tube. A rotating shoe

Typically it is being specified for dosing sodium hypochlorite, sodium hydroxide, sulphuric acid, flocculants, fragrances and essential oils. It is also proving popular for small scale water treatment and cooling tower applications. The Aura is particularly suited to shear sensitive flocculants due to its gentle pumping action and is also tolerant of small solids and therefore not dependent on solutions being thoroughly mixed.
Trouble free fit and forget ‘Fit and Forget’ is probably the best way to describe the ‘Autodos 2000’ range of automatic chemical dosing control systems for commercial swimming pools, spas and water features. With a history of up to 10 years, at least, trouble-free operation with not so much as a chlorine probe failure, it has an enviable record for reliability. The system is fully automatic and uses
advanced microprocessor and solid-state electronics to constantly display ‘real-time’ chlorine and pH values clearly on LED displays. With two separate channels for controlling pH and free chlorine or redox control, the system is easy to calibrate and to set-up to activate automatic dosing against pre-set values. Developed for ease of operation, an Autodos system will continually control and manage the water quality to ensure optimum conditions are achieved and maintained, whilst at the same time reducing to a minimum chemical consumption. Manufactured by Pahlén of Sweden, there are more than 30 different ‘off-the-shelf’ Autodos models for the automatic dosing and control of calcium hypochlorite, sodium hypochlorite, bromine and chlorine for almost any size or type of pool or spa. The units can be supplied as individual components or board-mounted and pre-plumbed, with all electrical connections and sensors in place, ready to be installed. In addition, it is possible to custom-design a unit to meet the specific needs
or roller passes along the length of the hose or tube creating a total seal between the suction and discharge sides of the pump. As the pump’s rotor turns this sealing pressure moves along the tube or hose forcing product to move away from the pump and into the discharge line. Where the pressure has been released the hose or tube recovers creating a vacuum, which draws the product into the suction side of the pump, the priming mechanism. Combining these suction and discharge actions results in a self priming positive displacement pump, the peristaltic pump. As the pumped liquid is contained within the hose or tube, it also makes the pump a hygienic pumping solution by eliminating any possibility for contamination. This also reduces maintenance time as the hose or tube is the only wearing part.
