FEBRUARY AWARDS WILL CELEBRATE MANY MILESTONES
BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes sets the scene for the SPATA and BISHTA Awards in Brighton and what will be a memorable industry event
ince the last SPN issue, there have been two major industry events. Firstly, the BSPF, BISHTA and SPATA annual meetings have been held in Andover and the sharing of information and views was very welcome to make sure that each of the respective associations / federations provide what members want.
S
Secondly, Tony Welsby’s President’s Weekend was a great success in Blackpool and there is separate news on this great event, in this issue of
SPN. The entertainment was provided by Stephen Bayliss and he made such an impact, that he has been asked to perform at the SPATA and BISHTA Awards in February. Preparations are underway for a series of events in the autumn and through to the spring. There are two SPATA Seminars being planned for Tuesday 23rd in Loughborough and Tuesday 30th November in Guildford.
Apart from a range of quality speakers offering financial and taxation advice, there are plenty of updates on industry related matters, including any further news on the recently implemented Building Regulations Part L.
The venues for the seminars are in the respective Sports Parks for Loughborough University and the University of Surrey. It is planned to have a tour of the relevant sports facilities, including the 50 metre pool at each venue. The SPATA and BISHTA Awards planning is in full swing and with SPATA celebrating its 50th anniversary (including its inception as the Association of Swimming Pool Contractors) and with this being the 35th anniversary of the SPATA Awards it is assured to be a memorable occasion. If this were not enough,

BISHTA is celebrating its 10th anniversary and the 4th awards event, so tickets are expected to be in heavy demand. To celebrate so many milestones, the event will be a black tie affair. Please get your tickets from the office as soon as possible, they are priced at just £69.95 + VAT. The awards provide a major focus for the industry to promote itself and with the help of BOTTLE PR, we will ensure that both the consumer and the trade press have sufficient information to provide coverage of the event. To enable us to prepare even more news stories about our industry, it will be of great help if SPATA and BISHTA members can provide background details about newsworthy items that may be able to be featured in the press. Looking further ahead, the move for harmonisation in Europe with respect to commercial pools has been in place for a couple of years with BS EN 15288 relating to the Design and Operation of Swimming Pools and for nearly a decade, there has been BS EN 1345 relating to swimming pool equipment. As previously advised, it is now the time for domestic pools to be included in discussions to bring about a European-wide agreement. Technical Committee 402 has been set up and the first meeting was recently held in Brussels and confirmed that domestic swimming pools, spas and hot tubs would be included within its remit. SPATA agreed to represent the UK at this meeting and there will be follow up meetings in Berlin in early February. Two Working Groups (WG) have been established to look at: Pool structure – design, product and installation (WG1) (for in-ground and above-ground pools); and pool water circulation, filtration and treatment (WG2). BISHTA has become aware that the Trade Price Group has ceased trading. BISHTA had been receiving a growing number of complaints from consumers and the trade about their activities and with their demise, we must continue to work together to raise standards and business ethics, so that consumers will want to buy from reputable companies. BISHTA believes that part of that reputation is to support the Trade Association and so those genuine, professional companies not already in BISHTA membership, should seriously reconsider applying to be a member.
The debate about whether swimming can increase the risk of asthma has been revisited by scientists in various European countries, using data from the UK, involving 5,738 in a study from birth until 10 years of age. The findings are very positive for swimming participation as the research suggests that swimming does not increase the risk of asthma, it actually appears to be associated with higher lung function and less respiratory symptoms, particularly among asthmatic children. On behalf of everyone at the BSPF, have a great Christmas and may I wish you a Happy New Year.
