INTERVET SCHERING-PLOUGH ANIMAL HEALTH

30 years of Scottish Aquaculture

People, products and progress

Mr David Schofield MRCVS Business Director, UK Aquaculture Intervet / Schering-Plough Animal Health

INTRODUCTION by David Schofield F

rom the early emergence of fish farming as an impor- tant industry, the UK has featured as a key market. Much of the knowledge, technology and expertise have been developed here and subsequently shared with markets across the globe.

Our stated objective is to ensure that our products and sup- port fit into the value chain for the farmer and their ultimate markets. A sustainable market with clear economic goals benefits all the stakeholders. Preventative health manage- ment programmes and vaccine strategies developed over many years now position the AQUAVACTM

and NORVAXTM range as a

leading solution of choice for fish farmers. My function, work- ing with the teams here, is to ensure that we continue to clearly communicate the product advantages and potential to produc- ers in their respective markets. We are fortunate to have two branches of Intervet / Schering- Plough Aquaculture supporting our customers in the UK. Firstly, the UK unit with specific objectives in ensuring technical and sales support to local operations and, secondly, members of the global unit, who bring additional expertise and a global perspec- tive.

Here we introduce our members of the team and highlight their roles and responsibilities.

Both Keith and Dafydd are working day-to-day with produc- ers and their vets here in the UK. With strong technical and commercial backgrounds they have a grasp of the key issues and opportunities for salmon and trout farmers in the UK. For us, meeting the needs of fish farmers as they manage their health strategies is about providing the right products and the necessary support with which to apply them economically and successfully.

SLICE® Monitor

Dafydd Morris is leading our SLICE monitor programme in the UK. The programme is designed to support salmon producers in their strategic use of SLICE to control sea lice. SLICE monitor has a number of key elements all of which are available to our customers. Central to these is a three stage review with the objective of constructing a set of protocols for optimal future use.

Historic

A thorough examination, using available records if possible, to assess the effectiveness of previous treatment programmes. This includes bioassays, flesh and feed analysis for emamectin benzoate, clearance data and site-specific information.

Current

A complete analysis of existing programmes including current use and management practices and immediate priorities. Best practice scenarios would be discussed with producers and their veterinarians. Where possible the company will provide a cost/efficacy calculation to establish the existing investment return.

Future

Utilising both the historic and current information, the com- pany will work with producers to develop site specific rec- ommendations for future sea lice control and build a plan to make available the necessary resources to track progress through this monitoring programme.

Salmon producers who would like to discuss a sea lice management review with Intervet / Schering-Plough Animal Health should contact the company on 01908 665050.
