FOREWORD
30 years of Scottish Aquaculture
A special issue for a special industry
Roseanna Cunningham, Minister for the Environment
M Impressive
I have been, and continue to be, very impressed by the passion of our salmon, trout and shellfish industries. The willingness of fish farmers to take ownership of problems is truly refreshing – developing new sea lice treatments, working toward a Scottish Standard for fish farms to minimise escapes, and strengthening the Code of Good Practice for Scottish Finfish Aquaculture. Of course, this is a process of continuous improvement and devel- opment and the Scottish Government will work with the sector every step of the way.
While occasionally overshadowed by the salmon sector, I am enthusiastic about the prospects for our mussel industry and see significant scope for growth. I hope that it can build on its impressive performance of the last few years, convincing more Scots to eat such a wonderful, healthy product.
We are lucky that Scotland has such productive and pristine rivers, lochs and seas. When allied to a strong regulatory regime and high fish health standards, a strong research base, and the dyna- mism of the people within our industry, I believe we are very well placed to capitalise on the worldwide shift to cultivation of the marine environment.
uch of this issue of Fish Farmer will look at the history of the Scottish salmon farming industry, which, granted, has had its chal- lenges. I am very focused on and excited about the future of the industry.
Last year, we published A Fresh Start: the Strategic
Framework for Scottish Aquaculture. This document makes clear our support for the continued growth of the sector. In the Scottish Government, we are doing our bit to support aquaculture by removing unnecessary bu- reaucratic barriers to growth, focussing our research on areas of greatest impact, and working directly with industry represent- atives on agreed goals and objectives through the Ministerial Group on Aquaculture.
I am very
focused on and excited about the future of the industry
