30 years of Scottish Aquaculture

TROUT

Richard’s campaign against the stigma of BKD - going strong since 1983

sophisticated equipment we used in the early days were nets, buckets, hand-held graders and pick-up trucks, by the mid-80s we had an automatic grader supplied via a fish pump, which saved a great deal of time for the workers and a great deal of stress for the fish, as the latter prefer to be transferred by pumps rather than nets.’

Innovation

And the next big revolution involved computerisation in 1987 but – true to his pioneering and innovative attitude – Richard decided to devise and implement his own computer pro- grammes for stock control and growth prediction himself. As a result, a vast homemade manual, known as ‘The Bible’, was created to ensure the complex stocking schedules required to ensure production of any size of fish any day of the year were correctly followed on site.

The final change he notes is that, after decades as an industry essentially run by talented amateurs, some degree of profes- sionalisation finally began to take place and, he explains, ‘the technical expertise in most fish farms and hatcheries is now very high.’ To illustrate his point, after a visit to the abandoned shed that was once the heart of Richard’s trout empire, we went to visit the state-of-the-art facility at Frandy, which was rebuilt for half a million pounds in 2005 (the original which it replaced had been cobbled together in 1974 for about £25,000) and can produce some 10 million fingerlings a year, making it more than twice the size of its nearest UK rival. Manager, Liam Do- herty, has worked there for 10 years, has several aquaculture qualifications and a host of new technologies at his disposal, including automated pumping, grading, counting and vaccina- tion machines, which mean that the fish virtually never have to be handled.
