Liberia’s cold war
relationships in the spotlight
LIBERIA–MONROVIA —
The Ambassadors of the Rus- sian Federation and Italy have welcomed the resumption of diplomatic ties between their countries and the West Afri- can nation of Liberia.
Speaking at the presenta-
tion of their Letters of Cre- dence, in separate ceremo- nies, to the Liberian president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the dip- lomats promised to redouble their efforts to accelerate bi- lateral cooperation between their respective countries and Liberia.
This is a very interesting
development in light of Libe- ria’s strong relationship with the U.S. during the cold war era when it became the satel- lite station for Washington to monitor the activities of Russia in West Africa.
Russian Ambassador Vladi-
mir V. Barbin, speaking of co- operation between his country and Liberia, pointed to the Putu Iron Ore Mining Compa- ny in Grand Gedeh County.
He said the successful ex-
ploration by a Russian mining company of the Putu Mines would attract more Russian investors to Liberia.
Ambassador Barbin spoke
of the need to support Libe- ria’s reconstruction programs, indicating that the operations in Grand Gedeh would not only increase government’s revenue base, but also create employment opportunities for Liberians, particularly those residing in the area.
Italian Ambassador
Giancarlo Izzo informed the Liberian leader of his coun- try’s readiness to assist in the reconstruction of Liberia.
Italy, he said, is already pro-
viding support to Liberia’s ag- riculture sector through non- governmental organizations.
Ambassador Izzo promised to encourage Italian entrepre-
