Return to manufacturer

By Derek Smith

2 Timothy 3:1-4: “This also

know, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boast- ers, proud, blasphemers, dis- obedient to parents, unthank- ful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, ac- cusers, incontinent, fierce, de- spisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, high-minded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God.”

The morning news is

enough to make you cry, and the evening edition isn’t much better. Our world’s ever-in- creasing violence and destruc- tion is becoming so terrible that it prompts many to ask, “What is the world coming to?”

God’s word clearly de-

scribes what will happen as we draw closer to the end of this age. We’re told that the world will grow cold, man will become consumed with his selfish desires, and violence and destruction will plague the land. The increasing fre- quency of natural disasters such as the life-shattering earthquakes in Haiti and Chile coupled with the seemingly endless stream of heinous and unnecessary violence does much to confirm our presence at the center of Biblical proph- ecy coming to pass.

Ours is certainly not the

generation that possesses the patent on violence. After all, man’s brutality to his brother has been around since the day Cain slew Abel. Nevertheless, many would agree that con- temporary man’s wanton sav- agery toward his fellow man is

more rampant and uncontrol- lable than ever before.

It is obvious that the de-

monic cycle of violence that paralyzes our society cannot be cured by legislation, hand- cuffs or jail cells. Laws, police and prisons are clearly not the salve needed to cure what ails us as a people. What are we who love peace and justice to do?

The things that cause man

to hate, cheat and murder his brother stem from a defect wrought by the sins of the heart.

It is a human frailty

curable only by man’s return to his manufacturer…and in case you don’t know to whom I refer, His name is Almighty Jehovah, aka God. Man must repent of his sins and submit to the Lord before it’s too late because, whether we believe it or not, our day of reckoning is near.
