Historical Society Opens Exhibits

O
n Sunday, March 21, The Historical Society of Rockland County will open its
long-awaited permanent exhibition, Voices from Rockland: Early History of
the County, made possible with funding from Provident Bank. The exhibit, featuring
historic objects and documents representing the stories of the people, buildings and
sites, uses the Historical Society’s varied collections. For example, a Lenape cooking
pot will begin to tell the story of the history around the Leni-Lenape daily life. A beau-
tiful and rare rooster weathervane leads us into the history of early Dutch residents,
exploring settlement patterns and important landmarks. Voices from Rockland also
showcases Nyack Turnpike mementos including information about Pierson’s factory
in Suffern and information on settlements and factories in Ramapo.
Why Archives Matter, a traveling exhibition developed by the Upstate History
Alliance, will be shown from March 21 through May 9. The exhibition explores the
meaning, use and preservation of archives and historical records using visuals from
repositories throughout upstate New York, including photographs and maps.
