Shearings revives the Wallace Arnold brand

SHEARINGS HOLIDAYS is rebranding its eight retail shops in a move that revives the name Wallace Arnold after more than five years. The retail division of the company is also joining Advantage from May 1, moving from rival consortium Global’s Independent Options. The Wallace Arnold name disappeared when coach giants Shearings and Wallace Arnold merged in March 2005 to form WA Shearings, which later became Shearings Holidays. The retail outlets were called WA Shearings

Travelshops, but research showed the use of the Shearings name meant customers thought the shops sold only coach holidays, even though they also sold third-party products. Chris Barker, Shearings Holidays marketing manager, said Wallace Arnold had about 30 travel shops in its 1980s heyday, and the name was still associated with independent travel agents. He said the Advantage name on the shop fascias would emphasise their independence. It would also give the agencies access to Advantage’s full range of suppliers, commercial terms, training programmes and business development services. There are now Wallace Arnold Travel

branches in Castleford, Bradford, Wakefield,

Huddersfield, Halifax, York, Rotherham and Chesterfield. Barker said the company hoped to open new branches in north-west England and also further south. Shearings is the only member of Advantage that is mainly a tour operator with a retail sideline. Advantage sales and marketing director Colin

O’Neill said: “Shearings is looking to develop the business and sees the potential for growing overall sales, and feels it will be well served by being part of Advantage.”
