OUTDOOR SECTION OIA UPDATE
Autumn PR campaign
The completion of the website and research projects puts the OIA in a much stronger
position to deliver some effective communications to promote the industry and the
outdoors in general. The research results provide the association with some strong
news hooks for the media, and viewers, listeners and readers can be directed to the
new OIA website.
The OIA has announced that it will embark on a proactive PR campaign in the lead
up to the school half term break. In mid-October, the association will target regional
and national radio stations, and expects to achieve around 50 on air interviews to
talk about the health benefits of outdoor pursuits and the importance of having the
right kit for such activities. Along with the radio activity, the OIA will target press and
other traditional and non traditional media. The hope is that the resulting coverage
will encourage families to consider including outdoor activities in their half term
itineraries.
Office arrangements and staff
Since closing the Ruislip office, the OIA has been looking for a suitable permanent
office. At the time of going to print, the association is confident that it will soon be
able to confirm a new base in Kendal. Once details of the new arrangement have
been finalised, they will be communicated to all members. Meanwhile, the
administration of the OIA will be managed by the team at Press Ahead. Any enquiries
can be directed to Chris Lines or Wendy Wilson there on 0191 516 6235 and they
will also respond to emails sent to info@outdoorindustriesassociation.co.uk.
Correspondence by post can be sent c/o Press Ahead, North East of England BIC,
Wearfield, Enterprise Park East, Sunderland, SR5 2TA.
Along with sorting out details of a new permanent base, the OIA has also agreed
how the association should be run in the long term. The OIA will recruit an individual
to manage its activities – someone capable of offering both strategic thinking, and
delivering the actions that are agreed by Council. The details of the role will be
finalised and advertised in due course. However, the OIA is interested in hearing from
potential candidates now.
Notice of Annual General Meeting
In recent years, for various reasons, Annual General Meetings of the OIA have been
very poorly attended. It is of course difficult to find time in busy schedules to travel
potentially some distance for what is essentially a matter of procedure. However, the
constitution of the OIA requires that an AGM be held to cover the year April 2007 –
March 2008. Formal notification of the date and venue for the next AGM will be
posted on www.outdoorindustriesassociation.co.uk in the near future, and will also
be communicated directly to members.
