performance support

ersonalised learning solutions can support today’s professionals by blending performance support and collaborative learning networks. The current research and development climate is unlike any other point in time. For centuries, innovation and the mastery of new fields were limited to those affluent enough to have access to education and resources or fortunate enough to be part of the ‘old boys’ network’ of scholars, or more usually, both. The stakes were high for these academics and scientists – every theory constructed, book published and invention made was a quantum leap, a turning point in history and a major advance for the communities it touched. Today the picture is very different. Information is abundant and innovation

continuous. Freer education and the introduction of online technologies have, of course, meant research and discovery can happen anywhere, anytime. The networked workplace has exploded with tools and content whose productive potential continues to grow at a rate hard to comprehend. This has done two things for learning. First, it has empowered individuals. With information, research and distribution channels so accessible, we are all scientists, researchers and inventors now – free to pursue our individual areas of interest and return the fruits of our discovery to the communities and businesses we’re engaged with.

Secondly, it has changed our expectations and attitudes as learners. As our virtual libraries (intranets, learning management systems (LMS), personal learning networks) have become bigger, we’ve had to develop new faculties for discrimination. Filtering information has become an acquired skill in itself: analysing and curating the flow of data to find what works in the moment to helps us overcome the challenges we face in our daily roles. We’re seeing this transformation throughout the EduTech space: schools where children are given devices and taught how to code and conduct critical research over the rote recall of facts. The phrase ‘Let me Google that for you’ has become the default response to questions in our everyday life. The information – whatever we’re
