FIELDREPORT Onthe M

any of you will have seen our double page spread on the Odyssey Works series putters in the last issue. Well, the

proof is in the pudding, so in the interests of furthering knowledge – and to improve my putting stats, I went and bought one! I had tried one before, in Scotland at The Open. I should point out that for the last 18 years I have used a brand of bladed putter- I loved its soſt feel, balance and consistent roll. It was going to take something very special to make me change aſter all that time. However nothing lasts forever. An increase

in my putts per round coupled with a general lack of confidence on the greens made me open to suggestions! I bought one the week aſter The Open and aſter an initial period of adjusting to the change I haven’t looked back since – what I was looking down at could hardly be more different to the Scotty! The Versa came with the Superstroke Slim 3.0 grip – again a departure for me as I had always used the standard Scotty Cameron grip. I went for the 34” shaſt option having been on the fitting machine as it was getting my eyes more over the ball. As far as the putter itself was concerned, I loved the look of it behind the ball. aids of the Big T in black, coupled with the long white line through the centre of the black strip from behind the face to the back of the putter made alignment an absolute doddle – much easier than a standard blade putter. Also, it just wanted to sit square, so that was one worry out the way.

thicker grip, the slightly firmer feel off the face and the different image behind the ball – all attained quickly through application on the putting green – the results were very good. Short putts were lined up quickly and effortlessly

and any doubt the face was not pointing down the line or square were The grip felt very snug in my hands, although much bigger than

I was used to – it just felt right – and it also took any element of hand/wrist action out as these grips are designed to do – another plus! The shaſt has a pleasing slight bend

away from the face which gives a slight ‘offset’ helping the hands feel ahead of the face, promoting a good action. The real technology behind the

‘Work’s line of putters is the face insert called Fusion RX, which is a coupling of a shiny stainless steel strip sitting in front of the legendary ‘white hot’ face insert. This stainless steel mesh strip is only half a mm thick, and incorporates the patented Metal-X roll pattern consisting of oval patterns which lock against the ball on impact – the result, less skid and earlier forward roll giving more accuracy and improved roll. quickly replaced by the confidence that they were, due to the fantastic alignment aids. Roll is consistent and forward roll is gained very quickly thanks to the face insert. The grip felt secure in my hand and coupled with the 350 gram head I felt I could hold the grip far lighter, thereby increasing feel and feedback from the stroke. The only slight issue I had was the distance control of long putts. I put this down to spending 18 years knowing exactly how hard I had to hit my previous putter to attain a certain distance and the different characteristics of the face insert of the Versa. Practice is a wonderful thing and as I have got used to how the ball comes off the face, distance control has improved.

Verdict This putter is certainly one golfers of all

abilities should be introduced to if expressing the desire to change their preferred weapon. I feel it really does make putting easier, and is a joy to use. Golfers spend less time practicing their putting than any other part of the game, and coupled with it being the area where most improvements in scores can be made quickly, the Odyssey Works V- Line Versa putter redresses the balance to a large extent. There’s no alternative to practice and hard work, but this putter makes the effort to do so more rewarding, and definitely more fun – and golfers love that.
