Return on investment is of course vital to anyone contemplating this kind of outlay. Keast believes such installations can create extra revenue from more lessons, more club sales, higher prices for lessons, and additional services like wedge-gapping analysis for the club’s scratch team. “Some even let the studio for half-an-hour for a skills challenge, through the simulation soſtware,” he adds.
“We have worked out that if you invest £15,000 and create an extra five-and-a-quarter hours a week – 21 saleable sessions in a month – you’d get a complete return of that money in 24 months. Bigger establishments could easily beat that.”
There is also the option of leasing the systems. “It doesn’t have to be a capital investment,” Keast adds. “Quite oſten big businesses treat this technology like cars and lease it over three years, and then upgrade. They see it as a monthly running cost rather than a capital investment. Companies are used to this way of thinking. The sole trader tends to think more in terms of a capital investment.”

one was 6-8 hours.
“Also, the V1 system now offers HD capability through a software upgrade that can better represent the quality of the images captured by USB 3.0 cameras.”
The technology solutions offered by Mia represent a seismic shift in the way the green-grass retailer conducts their business. And while it won’t always sit well in a mature and conservative UK market, that Luddite mentality appears to be relevant. While no one is expecting to see a militant group of grizzled old club pros taking brassies and niblicks to FlightScopes and force plates, there does appear to be a generational shift when it comes to adopting the new, tech-based teaching and fitting options. “There are five well-established clubs near me,” says Keast. “Eight years ago all had established pros, and none had dedicated fitting rooms or swing studios. Now, they’ve been replaced by more forward-thinking guys who recognise they’re only going to make money if they can offer improved service levels when it comes to teaching and clubfitting.
“The bottom line is that today, the handicap golfer has been made aware that all of this data is out there, and when they look to change equipment or
Over the next couple of months, Mia are hosting a series of open days at their Huddersfield facility Tech Excellence – a kind of working showroom in which interested parties can see all seven systems in action. Many of them integrate – for example the V1 system takes a feed from the BodyTrak pressure mat, meaning you can see how your ground pressure is working in real time throughout the swing. FlightScope can also be linked.
“We are also able to showcase the latest upgrades in all technologies,” says Keast. “Flightscope Elite launched in January, and supersedes the X2. It’s more evolution than revolution, but has new electronics and processing so is more accurate and has a better battery capacity; it can go 10 hours between recharges, while the old
