helping ranchers and cattle raisers transition to digital programs offering a secure web-based hub of infor- mation that can be accessed from anywhere. Owners, managers, employees and spouses can log on to a re- cordkeeping program or secure website from almost anywhere, using a desktop, laptop, wireless-enabled tablet or smartphone. Data can be collected on the fl y with digital weigh
scales, radio frequency identifi cation (RFID) tags and readers and other electronic equipment, all of which are recorded and go straight to your system. You are then able to share that information with other partners such as veterinarians, breed or industry organizations, feedyards, buyers, customers and marketers. “It can also make interacting with banks, fi nancial
institutions and government agencies such as the Farm Service or animal health agencies much easier,” said Miller. “Plus you have the added bonus of being able to back up your data to disks or secure online storage, in case there is an emergency situation like weather or fi re. You’ll always have a safe copy of your information.”

Find one to suit you Big or small, cow-calf or stocker, every operation
can benefi t from good, thorough ranch recordkeeping. If a large-scale, full-option digital platform seems too overpowered for what you need or doesn’t suit your skill level, start small with keeping your information in a digital spreadsheet. After you’ve become familiar with everything
that goes into preparing the information for input into your preferred program, you may discover ad- ditional areas of data that you can record. It’s never too late to expand your record keeping abilities and knowledge, especially as the cattle market expands in the next few years.
Attend a class on ranch record keeping If you’d like to learn more about ranch recordkeep-
ing and all the options available, plan to attend Miller’s session during the 2015 Cattle Raisers Convention, scheduled March 27 to 29 in Fort Worth at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
