the more reason to have fl exibility with your animal numbers. Lack of runoff has been an issue across parts of the area, with many lakes and ponds still very low.
Northeast Texas Ryan Walser, rangeland management specialist, USDA-NRCS Rainfall conditions across northeast Texas were
average to slightly below average for the region for September and October. Pastures were in good con- dition throughout northeast Texas. There was some recovery of warm-season grasses before the fi rst frost. Forage quality and quantity are currently in a decline
and will stay that way until cool season plants emerge. The timing of the rainfall was late in October and,
with cooler temperatures, bermudagrass pastures showed slow growth. First frost was in the fi rst week of November. Annual
ryegrass has greened up in areas that reseed yearly. Those who planted winter annuals such as wheat,
oats, rye and clovers, and got them planted early, have fared well. Late planted annuals have delayed growth and recent cold weather and temperatures in the 20s
at night has brought some cause for concern through the rest of winter. Cool season annuals may not produce as much for-
age for the early winter months if temperatures stay colder than average.
Trans-Pecos region Scott Bryan, rangeland management specialist, USDA-NRCS The Trans-Pecos region is considered the most arid
in Texas. The western two-thirds typically receives its rainfall from the summer monsoon, while the eastern third receives its rainfall from a bimodal weather pat- tern — spring and fall cold fronts. Both weather patterns produce varying amounts
of scattered precipitation, leaving some areas bone dry while soaking others. This year the Trans-Pecos had a normal rainfall pat-
tern. The eastern area received some helpful moisture during the spring and the western area fi nally saw the return of a steady monsoon. This has improved the amount of forage production. Since the beginning of September through the fi rst week in November, parts of the region have reaped
