Altmetric adds Mendeley demographics data

Alternative metrics provider Altmetric has added enhanced Mendeley reader demographics data.

This data is collated and displayed on the Altmetric details pages, where users can explore all of the original mentions of each article or other research output and see a breakdown of the geographical, disciplinary and professional status of users storing

the article in their Mendeley library. Altmetric founder Euan Adie said: ‘Working with the recently-released Mendeley API has meant that we can show our users valuable data about not just how many Mendeley users are saving their articles, but also where those users are, and where their interests might lie.’ www.altmetric.com www.mendeley.com

OpenGrey enables open access to UK theses

OpenGrey, a multidisciplinary repository for European grey literature, has now been enriched as the result of a partnership between the British Library and the Institute for scientific and technical information (Inist- CNRS). The project aims to promote data from EThOS (Electronic Theses Online

Service) to the OpenGrey system. The partnership adds more than 113,000 doctoral theses records from the UK dating back as far as 2003. In addition, more than 10,000 new theses records supplied by the British Library will be added to OpenGrey content each year. www.opengrey.eu

Austrian National Library releases collection through Europeana

A historic book collection from the Austrian National Library will be made freely available to the public via Europeana.eu, thanks to the library’s digitisation programme and Europeana’s introduction of a new rights statement.

The Austrian National Library is the first library in Europe to share a collection that has been digitised as part of the Google

Books project under the new rights statement.

Through Austrian Books Online, the Austrian National Library’s public-private partnership with Google, the library is currently digitising and making available its complete holdings of historical books from the 16th to the second half of the 19th century. www.europeana.eu

Although APS is not

participating in the current cycle of SCOAP3, the global open access initiative in physics coordinated by CERN, this agreement is said to demonstrate both organisations’ commitment to open-access publishing. www.aps.org

@researchinfo Third-party deal dropped by RCN Publishing

RCN Publishing is ending a long-standing arrangement to provide access to current full-text journal content via third-party database and aggregation services. The organisation says the decision

to end these arrangements is in keeping with its policy to serve users directly, providing access via its own journals platform, Literatum, from Atypon. rcnpublishing.com

Palgrave Pivot publishes first open-access title

Palgrave Macmillan has published its first open-access Palgrave Pivot title, Seeing Ourselves Through Technology: How We Use Selfies, Blogs and Wearable Devices to See and Shape Ourselves, under a CC BY licence.

Palgrave Pivot is a digital-first, mid-length research format that offers rapid publication and is more flexible than traditional academic publications. Titles are between 25,000 and 50,000 words – longer than a journal article, but shorter than a monograph – and are published

within 12 weeks of acceptance, post peer-review.

The book was published through a CC BY licence, meaning that readers can alter, transform, or build upon the content and then distribute the resulting work as long as the original work is correctly cited. This was the first book to be funded by the University of Bergen’s Publication Fund for Open Access, and is available to download for free from retailers such as Amazon Kindle. Print on demand copies are also available. www.palgrave.com/pivot

Springer partners with Beijing Jiaotong University

Springer and Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU) will jointly publish books, journals and digital databases covering the BJTU’s strongest research disciplines. The first project of the

collaboration is the international book series, Advances in High- speed Rail Technology. Starting in 2015, three to five books from the series will be published annually. The books are aimed at researchers, graduate students and professionals.

The project has secured the full support of the China Railway Corporation, formerly the Ministry of Railways. It will be part of the national strategy to export the technology and equipment of high-speed railways to other countries to help them improve their infrastructure while at the same time enhancing the reputation of products ‘made in China’. www.springer.com
