Team STX handpicks its players. Josie Owen, a former Virginia All-American who graduated in 2012, was the first player to sign with Team STX. She’s the captain.

“This was the first team that was put together by a brand as a sponsor,” said Kadie Stamper, the STX women’s lacrosse marketing manager and former Johns Hopkins midfielder. “These girls are recruited. That sets them apart from other club teams out there.” With Nike uniforms, equipment, tournament and travel expenses covered through this sponsorship, Team STX has a semi-pro dynamic. It has a support staff and community outreach platforms, including instructional youth clinics. But even Owen acknowledged Team STX is the outlier in a landscape otherwise devoid of playing opportunities for women. “It’s kind of a shame that there are so many great players that basically end their careers the second their last [college] game is over,” she said. “It’s something that you don’t ever mentally prepare for, so it’s an initial shock right away. Other than the U.S. team, which not everyone can be a part of, there are a lot of people on the sidelines who are done at a time when it seems pretty premature.”

FANTASY DRAFT Team Burns MIDFIELD: Kristen

ATTACK: Katrina Dowd, Katie Rowan, Nikki Boltja

Kjellman, Marlee Paton, Dana Dobbie, Brittany Coppa, Caroline Cryer

DEFENSE: Sloane Serpe, Sam Farrell, Colleen Smith

GOALIE: Liz Colgan

RESERVES: Coco Stanwick, Ashton Wheatley, Kellye Gallagher, Julie Gardner

COMMENTS: “What’s not to like? I got the record-setting duo of Dowd and Rowan up top, a bona fide star in Kjellman and draw-circle rock Dobbie in the middle, and the first-team All-American goalie for both D-I and D-III. Coppa was a steal in the mid-rounds.”
