30 Over 30

GREG GURENLIAN 30

New York Lizards

Good luck winning a faceoff against the beast. The all-time faceoff wins leader at Penn State also owns the MLL record

for highest percentage in a season, Gurenlian combines the speed and size to beat opponents at will at the “X.”

MATT VINC - 32 Rochester Knighthawks

Vinc, a three-time NLL Goalie of the Year, moonlights as a defenseman in the field game, having played the position at Canisius and with Team Canada. He savors both roles.

“As a goalie, there’s a lot of mental preparation during the course of a week, because after you finish a game, you start getting ready for the next opponent. That can be draining,” Vinc said. “As a defenseman, you get banged up and you spend days just recovering. Playing out helps me be a better goalie and vice versa.” Vinc grew up as a hockey and lacrosse goalie. When he got to Canisius, the Griffins already had a goalie. Canisius coach Randy Mearns, who has reunited with Vinc as the coach of

Team Canada, figured Vinc was such an aggressive player that he would thrive as a defenseman. “He was very open to the change,” Mearns said. “That’s the competitor in him. He could run for days and had tremendous footwork.” Vinc, a willing freshman eager to get playing time, embraced the move and gained perspective from it. “He developed into our best close defenseman,” Mearns said. But Vinc best plies his trade absorbing shots in front of a 4-by-4 goal. A key factor in Rochester’s three- peat, he’s the lone goalie among NLL MVP finalists this year.

“I’m not sure Rochester would ever allow me to play a game as a defenseman,” he said. “I’ve asked, jokingly, and they just shrug it off.” — Neil Stevens

STEPHEN BERGER - 32 Boston Cannons

Since his debut as the “Mr. Irrelevant” of the 2004 MLL draft, Berger has become a mainstay. Using his speed and craftiness around the cage, he has put up consistent all-star numbers since breaking in with the Lizards.

Hall has been a winner wherever he’s been, highlighted by an NCAA final four appearance at Delaware, MLL

championships with the Rochester Rattlers and Toronto Nationals, and Champion’s Cup with the Rochester Knighthawks. The NLL’s No. 1 overall pick in 2007, Hall has lived up to the hype, setting up teammates as well as finding pay dirt consistently since entering the league.

COLIN DOYLE 36

Toronto Rock

Trailing only fellow top 30 over 30 member John Tavares, Doyle is second all-time in total points in the NLL. “Popeye” has

been a fixture with the Toronto Rock, carving up defenses to help win six NLL Championships as well as three playoff MVP awards (1999, 2002, and 2005).

JOSH SANDERSON 37

Toronto Rock

Top five all-time scoring in the NLL, third all-time in assists. Need we say more?

MARK STEENHUIS 33

Buffalo Bandits

Impossible to miss on any lacrosse field with his red, flowing, curly hair, Steenhuis has become a staple of the Buffalo Bandits franchise. Fans

know when the 2008 NLL Transition Player of the Year scores, as the song “Brick House” by the Commodores will blare through the arena.
