CASEY POWELL

38

Colorado Mammoth/ Florida Launch

Florida is where people go to retire. For Powell, one of lacrosse’s all-time icons, moving to Florida reignited his MLL career. After appearing in cameos for the Hamilton Nationals and Chesapeake Bayhawks the past few seasons (eight regular season games), Powell is an everyday player again for the fi rst time since the 2008 season with the Rochester Rattlers. He’s also having an MVP- caliber season. Through eight games, he ranked second in the MLL with 37 points (17 goals, 20 assists) and had the Launch in the thick of the playoff hunt.

Powell also has developed a nice rapport with rookie Kieran McArdle, a fi rst-round draft pick out of St. John’s.

“Casey has taken him under his wing,” Florida coach Stan Ross said. “He’s been the number one guy at St. Johns. Now he’s probably the number four or fi ve guy. It’s a great balance between our veterans and rookies.” With Ryan Powell in the broadcast booth and Mikey Powell chasing a music career, the oldest Powell brother is the last still playing professional lacrosse. “Every game amazes me how

he’s holding up. He’s doing so many things with camps and clinics. He’s on the fi eld a lot,” Ross said. “He hasn’t shown any signs [of slowing down] yet. We’re going to need him at the end of this season.” — Phil Shore
