ON THE COVER Personalising education: how information

resources are evolving to meet student needs 18 Leader: Siân Harris Technology to personalise education

For anyone who finished their university studies more than about 10 or 15 years ago, the memories of the study materials used will be quite straightforward: mainly purchased print textbooks, volumes on library shelves and printed handouts from teaching staff. As those who have spent time with university students more recently will know, the picture today is much more diverse. Alongside print books, which people tell us there is still a strong appetite for, there is a whole range of digital resources and tools. The latest developments are designed not just to provide information in a digital format but also to fit with a student’s learning style, pace and ability. And it’s not just for students enrolled on degree programmes at a campus that technology is having an effect. The huge rise in massive open online courses (MOOCs) and similar online courses are providing new ways to facilitate learning.

Such trends, discussed on pages 18 to 23, look set to continue and the education space will be an exciting area to watch. Meanwhile other aspects of information discovery (page 12), evaluation (page 16) and access (page 4) are also discussed in this issue. @researchinfo
