Danyel Waro - Womads down under FESTIVALS & EVENTS Outlandish Nights at Kings


Place, London NW1 (27th – 29th March) takes new and exploratory paths into new musical territories; a mini-series co-curated by acclaimed songwriters Alasdair Roberts and Emily Portman, reflecting the darker and more leftfield elements in contemporary folk music. The first night features the poetry and song of Alasdair Roberts & Robin Robertson with Hirta Songs; the second sees the dark underbelly of ballads explored with The Furrow Collective and Marry Waterson, with some more upbeat relief from Moulettes; and the final night, a sirenic call from Emily Portman Trio, plus Mary Hampton & Debs Newbold. A three-day festival, planned to mark the centenary this year of traditional north Norfolk folk singer Walter Pardon of Knapton, takes place from 28th Feb – 2nd March. The event will include a concert at North Walsham’s Atrium Arts Centre starring Martin Carthy and Tim Laycock, both of whom knew Walter. Other events during the festival include folk sessions at pubs which Walter knew, an exhibition about Knapton during Walter’s lifetime, talks and screenings of rare film footage of the singer. As well as Norfolk singers and musicians
