arlier in the day I gathered round a table with the band in the George Hotel, and asked whether we can expect a second album in 2014. The answer was a (tentative) yes, with hazy talk about a release in “the summer”. “We’ve been rehearsing a lot,” Ali told me, laughing. “Maybe too much!” They’ve been busy writing new tunes and plan to start recording soon, but I was warned that it will be another piecemeal process with numerous recording sessions. Éamonn is confident. “I think there was a lot learned [with Ori- gins]; it’ll just come easier this time.”

“The line-up’s very much the same,” said John. “For us I think

it’s just keeping the energy, keeping the feel of the music, and trust- ing the fact that we can write music that people can have a jump around to. We want to keep the same sound. I think we’ve come up with a sound and a formula that people and the public enjoyed on the first album, so we don’t want to sway away from that.”

I wondered aloud if there was a grand concept to the group’s sound – ‘trad meets techno meets rock’ – or if it just developed organically once everyone was in place. “It’s natural, it’s just what we want to do,” is how Adam explained it. “We love traditional music but I think we’re not afraid to chuck in some of the other stuff here and there!”

Ross laughed. “If our mums and dads got us electric guitars we’d be in rock bands… but we unfortunately got fucking bag- pipes! We’re into the traditional, that’s our main thing, but this is about taking it out further.”
