25 f 12 shots from the fRoots Rocket Launcher a dozen leading questions to fire at Marko Markovic

If you were given the funds to organise a concert bill, who would the artists be?

Difficult question. I’m sure it would need loads of money for my dream concert and that is why I’m not a manager. I would invite at least a hundred musicians of all kinds, with unlimited drinks and food and the party would last for weeks. I would choose people who I appreciate as persons before all, which means that my father would be a headliner.

Which totally obscure record do you most treasure and would like more people to know about?

That is definitely Signature Time by Laszlo Gardony. I listen to this record all the time and it never gets old. I listen to all kinds of different music, but this album is special to me. When I heard it for the first time I had a sudden urge to open my own radio station, which would play only this album. It makes me angry when I talk to people and they say they never heard of Laszlo Gardony.

What was the best live gig you ever saw?

My orchestra’s gig, while my back was turned to audience. I’m kidding of course.

There are really a lot of shows, and it is very hard for me to pick only one, especial- ly because I enjoy different things on dif- ferent gigs. Mostly, I feel best on shows of unknown jazz or world music performers.

And what was the worst?

Unfortunately I had to see some of those. There isn’t many of them, but still… Painful experience. It wouldn’t be appro- priate to say the names, but let’s say that bad brass orchestra can be really bad.

What was your own best ever gig?

I am one of those people who are cursed with constant chase for perfection, which, so far, I find impossible to achieve. I have to be subjective and say that actually there are many of our shows I’m not happy with, but I’m still young, there is still hope for me. As for now, our show at Roskilde festival in 2010 is most important to me, mostly because the crowd was amazing and of course, because it’s Roskilde festival.

And what was your worst?

I like to think that audience don’t notice if we are bad. But the worst shows for me are the ones when I play sick, which happened several times. When I’m ill I pre- fer to be at home, by myself and I don’t enjoy the fuss, loudness, anything. But this is a cruel world, so I’m sure I’ll have few more bad shows ahead.

What’s the professional achievement you’re most proud of?

My career started early, when I was fourteen, and so far I have nine released

records behind me, I’m author of most of the songs. I also did a main role in a film Gucha, directed by Dusan Milic. It is musi- cal and melodrama and it was great expe- rience, totally different from what I usual- ly do. At the moment I’m working on music for one German movie which will be presented at Berlin International Film Fes- tival and I expect a lot of it.

What’s the most embarrassing thing you ever did in public?

Well, once we had a gig and the atmo- sphere was hot. I jumped and danced all over the stage, when I noticed my pants were torn at the back. Somehow I jumped my way backstage, and, not looking, took the first thing to wear, over my shoes. I got back on stage and one of the guys from my orches- tra looked at me laughing and said: You should at least take off your shoes. When I asked him why, he said: because you’re wearing pyja- mas, you’ll look less stupid with your shoes off.

Which song or piece of music would you most like to have written yourself?

There are

many… Miles Davis – So What; Louis Arm- strong – West End Blues; Chick Corea – Spain…

Who was the first musician or singer you were inspired to emulate?

Well the answer is quite boring. Of course, it was my father. I started play- ing trumpet when I was five. Until I was eight years old, I was trying to sound like him, when I realised that hundreds of others are trying to do the same, with the same ‘success’. Then I decided to create my own style, but in the meantime I discovered Michael Jackson…

Who was the last-but-one musician or singer you lusted after?

Well there is actually only one for me. Louis Armstrong. Absolute genius. I turn out into a little girl when I talk about him and of what he did for mankind.

If you had a rocket launcher, who or what would be the target, and why?

Ha ha! I would never like to be in pos- session of something like that. But if you mean firework rockets, call me any time.
