noticeboard ? ALWAYS THE BRIDESMAID

I feel like I’m being passed over for promotion. I’m very good at my job, but I’m quite a quiet person around the office and I think that’s the reason why. What can I do to get noticed? Theresa, Cambridge

You can gain visibility around the office by going the extra mile. Use your initiative and perform above and beyond your role. It’s also possible to build rapport with your boss without being loud. If you spot them going to make a tea, ensure that you happen to be there for a quick chat – without turning into a stalker. You must have an idea about their interests, so if you’re not a natural talker a few well-placed questions in that direction means they can natter on while you listen. Lastly, don’t be afraid to ask about promotions - they will admire your ambition.

TORMENTED AT WORK

I’m being bullied at work. One of the people in my team is really unpleasant to me. She constantly undermines me and makes me the butt of jokes. At first I worried that I was being over-sensitive, but now I’m starting to dread going to work. Sarah, Middlesbrough

You have to tell someone about this. That can be a scary thing to do, but it’s absolutely necessary. You’re not in the mafia and maintaining a code of silence will do no good. Bringing in a third party will ensure that other people are on the lookout for her behaviour and make her reconsider her attitude towards you. It also may be the case that she doesn’t know how badly her words are affecting you, in which case a meeting with everything laid bare could make her reflect on the way she treats you.
