The Inaugural Symposium on Affordable Golf Comes to Dairy Creek

T

hrough their continual efforts to combat the rising costs of play-

ing golf, the Golf Course Superintendents Associa- tion of America, PGA of America, National Golf Course Owners Association and the American Society of Golf Course Architects are excited to participate in the inaugural West Coast Symposium on Affordable Golf this spring. The Symposium on

Affordable Golf concept began at Southern Pines, N.C., in 2010. Created by golf course architect Richard Mandell, the goal was to raise awareness and understanding about the challenges the golf industry faces, through open discus- sion, exchanging ideas and highlighting successes that promote the health and sus- tainability of golf as a game and a business. The symposium is now

coming to the West Coast, and will be hosted at Dairy Creek Golf Course in San Luis Obispo from March 31-April 1. “We define the elements of the game of golf that are most important to golfers, and focus on how industry experts can lead efforts to transform the business of golf into something that better reflects the tenets of the game,” said Mandell, who has more than 20 years of experience in the golf course design business.

dresses affordability, best maintenance practices, golf course playability, pace of play, player development programs, sustainability and returning to the roots and traditions of the game. Past speakers have included Barney Adams, founder of Adams Golf; Jim Hyler, former president of the USGA; Dana Rader, LPGA master professional and Golf Magazine Top 100 Teacher; Ron Whitten, Golf Digest magazine architecture direc- tor; Greg Lyman, GCSAA director of environmental programs; Jaime Diaz, Golf World editor-in-chief, and several ASGCA, GCSAA, PGA and USGA educators and representatives. “The Symposium on

Affordable Golf gives not only industry experts, but everyday golfers the opportunity to present their ideas to assist in the promotion and sustainabil- ity of the game,” Mandell said. “While affordable golf means different things to different people, our goal is to show that affordability, profitability and sustain- ability are concepts that go hand in hand, and apply to the success of the golf

experience for both the end user and the operator.” And the GCSAA,

especially, is on board. “The GCSAA is appre-

ciative of Richard bringing his successful Symposium on Affordable Golf program to the West Coast,” said Josh Heptig, Class A golf course superintendent for San Luis Obispo County and president of the GCSA of Central California. “I have had the opportunity to speak and participate in past symposiums in North Carolina, and have come away with numerous ideas to improve not only my fa- cilities, but the entire game of golf. This is one of the few forums where a cross-section of golfers and industry profession-

Members of GCSAA, the LPGA and the PGA are eligible to receive continu- ing education points. “In staying with the theme of the event, our symposium is free of charge to anyone wishing to attend,” said Mandell. “All we ask is that you bring an open mind and some creative thoughts on how to make the game more affordable, fun and economically viable.”
