Technique before strength. Always practice the technique with light bars. Don’t let weight get ahead of technique. – Grant Gardis, LEVEL 2

Keep a logbook! Whether you use paper and pencil or an electronic device, keeping a train- ing diary is a valuable tool, especially if you’re training without an informed coach. This doesn’t have to be much, but keeping track of weights, reps, sets, misses and makes goes a long way toward dialing in your future training. – Harvey Newton , LEVEL 5
A couple years back, Steve Gough gave me the best single piece of information. He said “Watch the feet.” He was spot on! I could see the bal- ance of the athlete/barbell clearly! The feet would divulge if the athlete/barbell were for- ward, back, moving forward, in place or moving backward. Thank you, Steve Gough!! – Brian Derwin, LEVEL 5
The direction of the pull matters and “straight up” isn’t it, but leaned back a bit at full exten- sion, say five to 10 degrees. This keeps the bar deep over the base of balance and leads to better timing moving under the bar. The cue I use most often for this is “stand up.” Just stand up fast. It puts the lifter behind the bar at full extension and the bar over the base. – Dan Bell, LEVEL 2
