Don Labeth, staking engineer at SWRE, will retire from the co-op in early January after almost 37 years of service.


Labeth’s career with SWRE began on October 3, 1977 and has included numerous responsibilities and job titles during the years since.


He worked for five years as a lineman in SWRE’s Texas territory, several years in the co-op’s construc- tion crew, and two years as tree crew foreman. In his current position as staking engineer, Labeth stakes out new lines and services throughout SWRE’s 6,000 square mile service territory. His office is at SWRE’s Tipton headquarters.


“There have been a lot of changes in how things are done during the past 37 years,” Labeth said. “Probably the biggest change is that nobody climbs poles on a regular basis anymore.” In most cases, the availability of bucket trucks makes climbing poles unnecessary. Linemen today can work faster and more efficiently than in past decades.


Labeth was born in Hobart and is a graduate of Altus High School. After high school he served for seven years in the Army before starting his career with the electric cooperative. He says that he has no specific


What’s Cookin’ in the Co-op Kitchen... Great Pumpkin Dessert


This is a very easy dessert made with canned pumpkin and yellow cake mix. Serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.


1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9x13- inch baking pan.


2. In a large bowl, combine pumpkin, milk, eggs, sugar and spice. Mix well and pour into a 9x13-inch pan.


1 (15 oz) can pumpkin puree 1 (12 oz) can evaporated milk 3 eggs


1 cup white sugar


4 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice 1 (18.25 oz) pkg. yellow cake mix 3/4 cup butter, melted ½ to 1 cups chopped walnuts


3. Sprinkle dry cake mix over the top, then drizzle with melted butter. Top with walnuts.


4. Bake at 350 degrees for about 1 hour (cooking time may vary by oven) or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.

The Labeths live in Tipton. They have two grown children and nine grandchildren. “We at SWRE extend our best wishes to Don for a wonderful and well-deserved retirement,” said Mike Hagy, co-op CEO. “Don has contributed a lot to our cooperative. We will miss him!”
