that consumer packages available at discount hardware stores do not offer the same quality and may be disappointing. For large, do-it- yourself projects, it will pay off to initially consult with a local lighting professional.

In a few weeks thousands of homes across the state will be decked out with holiday lights. The biggest question consumers have these days is whether or not to spend the extra cash necessary to switch to the new LED holiday light products, or stay with the conventional incandescent strands. Great strides have been made in the past five years in LED holiday light quality and color. While the initial cost of a strand of LED lights is higher than the old mini incandescent type, over time they can prove to be a good choice. Consumer Reports magazine reported a cost of 14 cents to run three strands of C7-LED lights, 75 bulbs, for 300 hours, while the cost of conventional C7 lights for the same time was $8. Florida Power and Light Co. research has shown that LED lights use up to 98 percent less energy depending upon the bulb size and can save up to $4 a month for every 10 strands that are hung, thus resulting in a payback on the higher purchase price in two to three years. While they are more expensive initially, LEDs do save money on the electric bill over time and also run much cooler—reducing fire risk; they last twice as long and come in a larger spectrum of colors, allowing landscape and structural illumination that is much more vibrant. Color in the landscape doesn’t have to end when the sun goes down! Landscape lighting and holiday lights will extend the enjoyment of your outdoor living areas until the long days of summer return again. Happy holidays and gardening success in 2014!
