Reflecting on 11 Years of Service

BY DAN HANSFORD, NCGA PRESIDENT L

ast year in our NCGA Golf fall magazine, then- President Chris Clark reflected on his 10 years

of service in the Association. Chris and I were both elected to the board in 2003. Even though I’m 11 years older now, it feels like yes- terday that I first served with President Chuck Gielow. Since then, we’ve had

dedicated leaders in Bill Giffen, Bob Berg, Dick Ska- vdahl, Dean Bartee, Mark House, Michael Hexner, Vaughn Kezirian, Kerry Gordon and Chris. These men remain dedicated to the NCGA today, because as Giffen says, “It’s the best golf association in the world.” I couldn’t agree more. Our staffs with the

NCGA, Youth on Course, and at Poppy Hills and Poppy Ridge are committed to serving our membership however they can. The Asso- ciation continues to provide valuable benefits for nearly 150,000 golfers in North- ern California, and I think this is reflected in not just a stabilizing in membership numbers, but growth. We feel that with the

remodel of Poppy Hills

and its reopening in April 2014, enthusiasm and sup- port for the Association will be at an all-time high. The course itself will be a truly unique golf experience in Pebble Beach. Sandcap- ping Poppy Hills will greatly improve course conditions year-round, allowing for a dry setup and new options to play each hole, both on the ground and through the air. We can’t wait to unveil the distinct look the natural sandy areas give to our natural Del Monte Forest setting. We also can’t wait for you

to try our revamped driv- ing range and practice areas, and walk into the remod- eled clubhouse for the first time. Work just began on the clubhouse, which will include renovations of the two bathrooms, and a refreshing take on the restaurant and pro shop, which will be divided by a glass wall. The restaurant will have an upgraded menu from Poppy Ridge Executive Chef Ray Evernhan, with new outdoor seating on the deck. We are also expanding

the snack bar, complete with more seating, fire pits and outdoor furnishing. Be sure to visit

PoppyHillsGolf.com for all the latest updates on the renova- tion, including interviews and video tours of the course. And please continue tostop by NCGA.org to keep informed on all Association news, from tournament results to new benefits, to get the most out of your membership. Last, but not least, is our

youth. By the end of this year, our Youth on Course program will have subsidized its 300,000th round of golf. And our Junior Tour— in partnership with the NCPGA—has just com- pleted a sixth successful season with more than 600 members—the most of all time. Please take the time to learn more about these two programs and support them as much as you can. Youth in the game of golf is our future. Thanks again for your

support. It’s been a busy 2013, and let’s have an even better 2014.

Poppy Hills’ 11th hole is the only entirely new hole on the course.
