Q&A FROMTHETOP > DAVID PEARCE | ARCHITECT AND URBAN DESIGNER I am now working on ways to share

the research findings with the industry, with the Construction Industry Council and others. I am also developing learning material with Dr Alex Copping for the MSc in International Construction Management at the University of Bath. I now work for Knowledge Sharing, a specialist knowledge consultancy. We have developed practical processes from the research findings, which allow us to benchmark how well a team or company shares. We then implement bespoke solutions to improve sharing.

ON HIS CAREER I always looked for roles where I could take a great deal of responsibility. In the first 10 years I led larger and larger projects, culminating in a £250m hospital project, with a team of 85. At this time I became more

interested in the management side of the industry and studied for an MBA. The knowledge I gained helped me become a director with Capita Symonds, managing four studios around the country. I also became a part-time teaching fellow at the University of Bath. After a few successful years in

practice management I decided to change track. I had learnt a great deal leading projects and believed there were better ways of working that had to be shared with others. I spent 18 months undertaking a research project into how information and knowledge is shared within and between companies involved in construction.

ON HIS HIGHLIGHTS AND REGRETS The highlights of my career are the people I have worked with. Together we have built some great buildings, but I hope the friendships will last just as long. As I have always had goals and the drive to try and reach them, I don’t have any career regrets.

ON ADVICE TO YOUNG MANAGERS Understand that construction is all about people and teamwork. Construction is incredibly complex, it takes a very large team of people to deliver successfully. Mutual respect for each other is critical, but it is just as important to respect and understand what others do. The industry has become incredibly

fragmented, and the only way to make it work is to understand that your output is someone else’s input, it is not something to simply put on an extranet site or drop in a model with no thought to how it will be used.
