required to support or protect cables. Where single insulated (non-sheathed) cables are used, extra mechanical protection is required, usually to a specifi c IP rating. Metallic distribution trunking is ideal for this and also tamper-proofs essential supplies.

Stewart Milne Timber Systems Milbury Reach, Exminster, Devon Robert Baker, project manager, Linden Homes South West
Milbury Reach is a development of houses on the outskirts of Exeter, 26 of which will have timber systems supplied by Stewart Milne Timber Systems. Our vision is to deliver a community
of homes that are energy effi cient and therefore cheaper to run. To do this, we have used a fabric-fi rst approach which prioritises energy effi ciency for the life cycle of the building, and for which correctly designed timber systems are well suited. Timber frame is a sustainable, low-carbon material that achieves excellent energy effi ciency and integrates well with our overall vision of an environmentally responsible development. One of the project’s key challenges is
time pressure. Many of the houses have been sold off-plan and the reservation list

KINGSPAN TIMBER SOLUTIONS has delivered more than 38,000 wall components and 20,000 timber trusses to main contractor ISG to build 625 lodges at the Center Parcs Woburn Forest. The £61m development features a district heating system connecting each of the lodges to a central biomass energy centre, plus 20,000 newly planted trees to improve biodiversity. Kingspan’s closed panel timber frame system can be made watertight within an average of eight weeks.

BEATTIE PASSIVE NORSE is a new joint venture company set up to offer the Beattie Passive offsite Passivhaus system. The modular method of construction achieves Passivhaus-compliant buildings at a lower cost than traditional methods. Foundation beams, ground fl oor, walls and roof all form a continuous void. Once in place, fl ame retardant insulation material is injected into the fl oor, wall and ceiling cavities, creating a continuous seal.

PORTAKABIN HAS won a Zero Waste Platinum Award at the Awards for Excellence in Waste Management and Recycling 2013. The award recognises the fi rm’s progress in meeting sustainability targets, including a 7.5% annual reduction in carbon output, primarily through a reduction in heating oil consumption, improvements to the waste management process, and the formal assessment of environmental performance for its top 20 suppliers.

continues to grow, so we need to deliver top-quality homes as quickly as possible. Timber systems are manufactured offsite and erected in a series of panels that signifi cantly increases the speed of build, and has helped us to build some of the homes four to fi ve weeks quicker than a traditional build.
Stewart Milne Timber Systems has a
reputation for research and development and having worked with the company previously we were aware of its range of innovative timber systems and experience of integrating into large or small time-pressured projects. We also had confi dence in the quality of Stewart Milne Timber Systems’ work on site. By using timber systems for part of the
project, we have been able to construct houses more quickly than a traditional build while still ensuring maximum energy effi ciency and quality. Stewart Milne Timber Systems also supplies and erects the timber systems thereby further decreasing build time, construction waste, and health and safety risks on site.
Check level of robustness needed The location of the installation
determines the robustness of the product. For marine, coastal or industrial settings where there may be corrosive elements, for example, a deep galvanised or stainless steel product will maximise the service life of the installation. If cable management is installed outdoors, check UV resistance.

using the weight of the cables, any ancillary items that are subsequently fi tted and appropriate dynamic loads such as wind or snow. This weight needs to be worked out as a uniformly distributed load (UDL). Caution should be applied to any point loads as a point load placed at the centre of a span can have the effect of doubling the UDL.

installation should be based on whole life, installed costs. Care should be taken to consider the cost of the containment, the cost and number of required supports, the speed of installation and the labour rate, training requirements and waste products.
