Q&A Recolight

In the consultation there is a proposal that LEDs be included in the same WEEE category as gas discharge lamps. You said in your article in our June 2013 issue that you support this; what are your reasons for this?

In most EU member states, both LEDs and GDLs are already in the same category. We support this as putting them in the same category makes recycling targets achievable. As the industry moves towards LED the number of gas discharge lamps put on the market will decline. But large quantities of waste discharge lamps will continue to arise for many years to come. Putting both together in the same category will prevent GDLs from becoming an unfunded or “orphan” waste stream.

What can we expect in the future from Recolight?

This is a very exciting time for the WEEE recycling industry. By this time next year the Government will not only have decided on the new regulations but they will have implemented them. Looking to the future, Recolight is doing all it can to ensure that lamp recycling is made as easy and as accessible as possible. Achieving the higher targets set out in the new WEEE directive will require a joint effort, and Recolight will continue to make its collection point network widely accessible.
