Recycling

“The free collection service through Recolight is proving to be a great success. Companies we work with are delighted to have a simple method of disposing of their waste lamps and we are happy to be playing an active part in protecting the environment.”

Trilight - Gus Cruickshank

There are many schemes like Recolight available, which not only try to create an easy and safe collection and recycling service but are also raising awareness about the issues surrounding waste recycling. The Government's aims to increase recycling totals in the years to come and as far as the environmental issues are concerned this is needed. There is a huge amount of information about the WEEE directive within the lighting industry but the people that really need to be informed are the general public; the small business owners and the facilities managers all need to know where they can recycle their goods. Even homeowners will, in time, need to be recycling their WEEE waste and the Government need to ensure that the messages are getting passed down to every level of the consumer chain. There are many different companies

offering a similar service to Recolight and really the service offered is priceless, as these bulbs and other electrical equipment need to be recycled safely. Each florescent lamp that ends up in landfill could contaminate up to 30,000 litres of drinking water to a level that is potentially not safe to drink and until recently research shows that many of these lamps could have ended up in landfill.

We asked Gus Cruickshank from Trilight about the service offered by Recolight:

What does the service Recolight offer mean to your business? Our customers benefit from the information we pass on from Recolight, Trilight could not operate the recycling compliance scheme without the knowledge and assistance from Recolight who offer a professional service made simple to understand together with regular updates, a concise web site and easy to use monthly declarations.

Do you think enough is being done to inform lighting consumers of the need to recycle?

Since the WEEE directive scheme was introduced in 2007, the manufacturing and wholesale industry has been made well aware of the environmental requirements and legal issues to recycle by Recolight, unfortunately the next step with consumer end users do not receive the same education or commitment from Government and lack of facilities to recycle from local Government either at drop in centre’s or curb side collections.
