M

y boat bobs in the Pacific Ocean. I’m

about to dive into uncharted waters. Tey could be full of sharks. And the nearest hospital is four days away. My heart pounds. I jump into the water feet first. Te water

is so clear that it makes me feel like I’m flying through air. Below me, schools of fish swirl. I see colorful parrotfish and silvery chubs. Tiny damselfish dart around. Big red snappers stare at me. I keep an eye

on them, too. Tese curious fish can act like pesky puppies. On other dives, snappers have nibbled my fins. Tey’ve nipped my earlobes. Once, one even tugged my ponytail.

Swimming Deeper As I sink deeper in the water, the fish below me swim out of my way. Now I can see the seafloor. A coral reef stretches as far as I can see. It looks like a field of giant, pale blue roses. Suddenly, I spot a gray shadow. I look up. A

whitetip reef shark is swimming toward me. Its body is flat and scars cover its sides. Tis shark can twist through narrow cracks. It scrapes its skin against the rough reef as it chases fish. Te shark looks at me, then wriggles its tail

and swims past. I might be the first person it has ever seen. My heart starts pounding again. I’m excited!

Fun Fact: What’s one thing Sala always brings on his trips? Dark chocolate!
